Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Siegrest.
Hi Tyler, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
It honestly all started at EDC 2015. I was blown away by this life that was so opposite to the one I had been living. A U.S. Army Airborne combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient in the heart of Electronic Music. It only took a couple more shows before I realized my natural feel for making.
After an Honorable Discharge from the service and a couple of years of soul-searching, I enrolled in Maricopa Community College. Here I received mentorship from a fantastic team of instructors who have found success in multiple facets of the industry and acquired all the tools necessary for success in the music business. With a G.I.Bill-funded AAS degree in Disc Jockey Techniques out of Scottsdale and with the help of friends and family, I uncovered a new profound meaning and understanding of the subtle vibrations that are life. Thus my journey as DJ SeeWeed began.
Having a foundational understanding of the music business laid out by the College sparked an itch for application. I set out in search of an opportunity and discovered a crew of volunteers and local artists to create a near-weekly community give-back event called WEIRDnesday. The project was designed to give the underground festival community a complementary outlet during the week. Musicians, visual artists, event organizers, dancers, promoters, and other industry professionals would donate their time and gear to the weekly cause. It was a kindling move for my SeeWeed journey as it created new networks and bonded friendships. It gave new artists (including myself) an opportunity to define their sounds and hone their crafts in front of an energized and passionate community of music lovers.
Upon completion of the WEIRDnesday project, I redirected my focus toward the production of my first 2 singles, Choice and Dancin Like She Drowning. I quickly followed those up with a 10-song album called TRICHOME EFFECT which was released in September 2020. During the finalization of the Trichome Effect, I moved to Tucson, Arizona where I’ve been managing a variety of projects at WaveLab Recording Studio called WaveLab111. It’s essentially a creative community space where poets, comedians, gamers, streamers, artists, and musicians have found the sanction to practice their passion in the presence of accepting and open minds.
With a second album about to flower and new waves to ride I am currently reestablishing myself on most fronts creating measures for radical success in the near future.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a ship show in all the ways~ Riding the waves of creativity.
Undoing military programming and re-parenting my neuro-nontypical self has been a mission. It’s taken a lot of mental work to open myself up after the service. Being a parent in the music industry, and in life in general, poses a challenge as well but I don’t think I would have the same drive or morals without my daughter.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
They call me DJ SeeWeed because I See Weed and I Smoke It. I’m An Arizona native, cannabis-infused, indie electronic producer, DJ, and MC. I spin dope tunes to smoke to, & can turn the party up when it’s time. A conduit to any party I can shift frequency to blend into most soundscapes!
An Indie Electronic Music TrailBlazer with a fresh take on bass music. My SeeWeed Sessions are as loud as the herb I burn. Spinning Cannabis Infused SoundWaves Gets Buds feeling the Trichome Effect. I’m currently performing and have taken the stage at Burning Man, Friendship Reunion, Gem and Jam, June Jam, Bloodfest, FullMoon Festival AZ, FNKtion, and FUNKtopia.
As well as a variety of clubs and venues in Arizona Mexico, California, Texas, and Nevada. With my work cut out for me organizing a show at WaveLab. I also do sound engineering and for Rotary International, equipment supply for Private events, and DJ destination Weddings in Sedona with DownTown Brown Productions.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I’m born and raised a Phoenician. I love calling this place home.
The desert warmth is my favorite. The surrounding awe in scenery and the sunsets are next levels. As with most cities in the US, I wish to see a greener approach to our energy use and as well with how we are connected to the supply chain.
