Check Out Sophia Bavishi’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Bavishi.

Sophia Bavishi

Hi Sophia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My background in music actually comes from musical theatre. I am classically trained in voice. I started theatre and voice lessons at the age of 9 and lived the life of a theatre kid until about the middle of high school. When I was 16, I realized that while I loved performing and doing musical theatre, it was really the music that I loved. I decided to try taking music more seriously. I continued with voice lessons and technique training but started dabbling a bit with songwriting. One of my voice teachers, Stephen Crawford, was actually the one who pushed me to write music, and I am so glad I did because I loved it! I loved being able to create something that others can also relate to, but also to have something that was an outlet for my emotions.

I ended up going to school at ASU to study music in the Popular Music program. I started taking more in-depth classes on songwriting, music production, mixing, and so much more. I was introduced to live looping by one of my teachers and discovered that I loved that style of performing. It was actually a really exciting time because I realized that I had found my niche. I started playing around with some of the equipment they had at the music building, including the Ableton Push 2. I was able to spend some time exploring it and discovering just what it could do. I quickly realized that this was my new favorite way of performing. I loved the electronic aspect of it, as well as the control I had with it!

I graduated this past May, and since then, I have been performing and writing as much as possible! I just had my first headline show with Rebel Lounge in the first week of January. It’s been a great start to the year so far!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The career path I chose will never be a smooth road. The music industry has many ups and downs and so many bumps along the way. Things can seem like they are going really well one month, then the next month, you can find yourself scrambling for work and trying to come up with ideas for new music. Some struggles I have faced have been discovering my sound as an artist. Having a background in musical theatre and being classically trained has its pros and cons. While have great technique has saved my voice numerous times, the con is that I sometimes feel as though my voice doesn’t fit into a specific genre. It has taken me a while to figure out the type of music I like and want to create, but that is the whole process of this. I’ve realized that finding your sound can take a lot of time.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a live-looping artist and singer-songwriter! The way I perform is a bit different than your usual band or artist you may see on stage. I use the Ableton Push and Ableton Live as my way of performing. I run everything through my laptop, and into my interface, and from there, I live loop sounds and vocals in real time! I’ve found that it is a really fun way to create and perform. I have definitely found my niche in the digital/electronic world of music. I am a solo artist, and I use live looping to embody the sound of a band. It’s truly something I am really proud of. I love that I only have to rely on myself!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The thing that matters most to me is my family, and as cheesy as it may sound, it’s true. Without them, I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today. I didn’t choose a career with a straightforward path. Trying to make it in the music industry takes talent, hard work, creativity, and a little bit of luck. It takes a supper system with people who believe in you. I am so thankful to have such a supportive family that helps push me to achieve the goals I never dreamed I could even hope to achieve. Having people that believe in you when you’re doing this alone makes it feel like you have the best support system in the world.
