Today we’d like to introduce you to Shandalee Butcher.
Hi Shandalee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I operate a dessert food trailer. I started during a really rough time when the pandemic had occurred. I had
lost my job of eight years as a baker for a restaurant. I had a dream, I had a talent, and I was willing to work
really hard to see it succeed. I wanted to feel important and be seen and heard, and I felt like in the industry
I was in, people took advantage of my position. I really wanted to show my kids that with a lot of hard work
and determination, you can do anything.
I’ve been serving this community since the fall of 2021. To say the journey has been difficult would be an
understatement. Nothing is easy when you’re starting a business. Everything in life takes a village, whether
it’s family support, community support, or support from other businesses. Although my journey has
absolutely been a rough one, it has gotten me to where I am today, and I am genuinely happy and grateful
for where I’m at now.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced has been trusting the wrong people. I’m a very vulnerable and
loyal person, and unfortunately, part of this journey is learning who you can and cannot trust and who is
really in your corner. Those kinds of setbacks can destroy a person and a business. It’s how you overcome
them and handle them with grace and maturity that truly defines you and your business. I know those were
experiences I needed to learn from in order to grow, and now I’m at complete peace with them.
Another hardship, of course, has been financial struggles. The ups and downs of the economy can affect
product prices, but they also affect the customers who support your business. Running a small business
comes with many lessons, and every challenge has helped shape me into the person and business owner I
Am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to serve fun, creative, imaginative, no-limitations, quirky-type desserts. I always try to cater to my
customers’ wants and needs. Gluten-free and sugar-free options are some of my top-selling items, and
being able to cater to that community alone is truly priceless. Honestly, I think my personality, my
genuineness, and the care I have for people are what really set me apart from others.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Honestly I did everything myself so its hard to say, but do your research. Reach out to other amall businesses and get advice. SOME are willing to actually help out .. some will not. But at the end of the day your buisness is yours and you have to be your own teammate.
