Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Malcolm.
Sam, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m from the Stillwater Paiute-Shoshone Reservation, and I perform stand-up comedy and juggling for a living. I want to be a positive role model for my community and believe it’s important to teach the next generation that you can do something out of the ordinary while still caring about your family, community, and culture.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
As a juggler, I strive to push my limits and develop my skills. I have worked very hard to be able to accomplish things such as juggling seven clubs, nine rings, and nine balls. This is an athletic endeavor that I pursue to create better performance for my audiences by displaying mastery of the things I perform.
As a comedian, I try to view the world in a way which allows me to connect with people from all walks of life and experience their perspective. I also like to use comedy as a way of talking about things that may make us uncomfortable but in a positive way.
As a performer, my goal is to make my audiences feel happy.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
Yes and no. I think the purpose of an artist is to create a commentary on life. Whether that be political, personal, or social. So in that sense, I don’t believe artists have changed. But I believe that the culture we live in is based so heavily on buying and selling creativity that artists may be creating less for the sake of creation and observing. This affects me, I need to work obviously, and my livelihood is dependent on being hired or paid for my skills, but also it makes the creation process more competitive sometimes.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I perform all over the world. My big project lately has been setting up a comedy album recording and getting my show ready to perform all summer at outdoor fairs and festivals. I like to keep people smiling through social media as well, (Facebook, Instagram). Find me @sammalcolmshow.
