Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger Terry.
Hi Roger, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I have always been intrigued by real estate. The altruistic nature of the real estate profession is fulfilling as you are serving your clients and taking part in helping their home-buying and business dreams come true. Also, full-time entrepreneurship has been a lifelong dream of mine. The real estate profession provided an opportunity to serve clients and create a “life by design”. As I began the journey of building my real estate business, I wanted to build a full-service real estate business capable of supporting residential, commercial, and RE investor clients. There are no straight lines in life. My journey to becoming a full-time real estate professional took many turns. Prior to starting my real estate business, I served as an executive in higher education, the private sector, and non-profit organizations. The skills set and tool kit acquired in those roles contributed to my success in the real estate business. I was familiar with profit and loss statements, compliance, integrating technology to optimize business processes, negotiation, and contractual law to name a few. The most important prerequisites were soft skills including the ability to be relatable while building and cultivating relationships.
My ongoing success will be attributed to a commitment to facilitating positive outcomes for my clients. Prioritize your clients and the business will come. Understanding client needs cannot happen without getting to know them by listening intently with empathy and compassion. I cannot overstate the importance of applying soft skills and a skills-based approach to my business best practices. I have been amazed at how much business I have been able to do just because of soft skills coupled with continuously offering a value add in the form of relevant RE information to every person I meet. My pillars are: Be humble, be aware, be responsive, and do more listening than talking. This may sound simple or like a cliché, but it is so relevant to becoming effective and successful as a RE professional. As I continue my journey in real estate, I look forward to being a lifelong learner, highly skilled professional, and devoted servant to my clients.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been smooth. However, it has not been overly difficult. As Nelson Mandela said, “I never lose. I either win or I learn”. There have been many learning and growth opportunities along the way. As I have endeavored to find my way, I have found that it is not as simple as listing houses or showing houses. There are many details and nuances to becoming an effective and knowledgeable real estate professional.
Identifying leads, lead conversion, marketing tools, social media savvy, and leveraging your sphere of influence are just a few of the struggles novice real estate agent encounters during their journey. I have overcome early struggles by leaning on veteran agents and investing in professional development opportunities offered by my broker office and WE SERVE.
