Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole McGaughy.
Hi Nicole, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My makeup and photography journey began in 2005 at a Chanel cosmetics counter in Valley Stream, NY. There, I discovered the magic of makeup artistry and built upon my existing knack for creativity, learning to make the most out of any product while delivering exceptional customer care. This experience was the foundation for a career that would constantly evolve.
In 2007, my move to Lithia Springs, GA, opened new doors, leading to my first photoshoot with models for a Don Cannon project. This thrilling experience solidified my love for merging makeup with photography. As I took on a counter manager position at Lancôme in Douglasville, GA, I met incredible individuals who became clients, friends, and family. This chapter allowed me to refine my skills and style, drawing inspiration not only from my talented coworkers at the nearby MAC counter but also from the vibrant artistry I admired on shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race. My freelance makeup career officially began with a heartfelt referral from a bride and her mother. As I shared my transformations on Instagram and Facebook, my portfolio blossomed, and I attracted a growing clientele thrilled by my work. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, I embraced a long-existing passion for photography, inspired by a thoughtful Christmas gift from my husband: a Minolta camera. What began as a fun hobby, capturing moments with my children, evolved into a professional venture as I started documenting the heartfelt memories for my clients, friends, and family. In 2022, I decided to take my passion to the next level by enrolling at Southern New Hampshire University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in digital photography. Soon after, Nicole Renee Photography was established. I now offer makeup, photography, and photo editing services to meet my clients’ diverse needs.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey as a makeup artist and photographer has certainly had its share of challenges. Throughout my career, I have encountered various obstacles, such as miscommunications with clients about expectations and outcomes, which led me to create clearer contracts to prevent misunderstandings. I also made the decision to implement a ‘no deposit, no appointment’ policy after dealing with some last-minute cancellations. These experiences taught me how to manage expectations effectively, including working with demanding clients and reminding bridal parties of the significance of the bride’s special day, which has helped me feel more in control and less stressed. Additionally, I’ve occasionally struggled with self-doubt, often comparing myself to other creatives and underestimating my own God-given talents. Fortunately, my supportive circle of clients and friends has always helped me recognize my strengths and navigate away from that negative mindset. Each challenge has been a valuable lesson, contributing to my growth and resilience in this industry.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in beauty enhancement, ensuring that my clients see their true selves when I present them with the mirror at the end of our session, unless they request a different look. My focus is on building their confidence and helping them feel beautiful and comfortable in front of the camera and in the chair. I’m known for my lighthearted approach, often bringing a sense of humor to the experience, as well as my ability to listen without judgment and offer encouraging words and advice. What I’m most proud of is the positive impact I have on my clients’ self-esteem, helping them recognize their inner and outer beauty. This journey is more than earning a living; it’s about uplifting others and fostering self-acceptance. What sets me apart is that I refuse to cancel appointments unless an act of God occurs, and I will drop what I’m doing to fill in for another creative when needed. I’ve been fortunate not to experience any major illnesses or sicknesses and have only worked through a migraine a few times, but for me, the show must go on.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
In my journey toward personal and professional growth, I find incredible value in a variety of resources. For inspiration and guidance, I often turn to the Holy Bible app, which provides meaningful insights and answers that resonate with my life. Music also plays an essential role in my daily routine; I enjoy curating playlists on Spotify that enhance my focus and creativity. While I’m not an avid podcast listener, I make an exception when seeking professional parenting advice, notably to support my daughter and her unique strengths. In those moments, I explore relevant podcasts that offer valuable insights aligned with my current challenges. Additionally, my time in humanities courses during college has significantly shaped my understanding of people and perspectives. The knowledge and resources gained from these classes have enriched my empathy and broadened my worldview, enabling me to better connect with others in both personal and professional contexts.
