Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Lucciola.
Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Melissa Lucciola. I’ve been playing music since I was a little kid. I’m a multi-instrumentalist and I play guitar, drums, bass, keyboard, clarinet, and more. I’ve been playing music in bands for 16 years now, so it’s been a while. Currently, I’m in two bands. The first one is called Francie Moon. I play guitar, sing and write songs for that band. The other band is called Gustaf, in which I play drums.
I started playing music when my mom taught me the keyboard when I was about 5 years old. I’ve always loved music but didn’t want to start a band until I heard Led Zeppelin. The feeling and the sounds and the energy just blew my mind completely. The moment I heard them I decided that all I wanted to do was make music and help people feel the magical feeling I feel when the music takes me away.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I always joke that I wish there was a rock and roll college that you can go to and learn all the stuff you have to figure out on your own along the way. Playing music is barely half of having an actual career in music. Especially if you are doing it on your own. You end up being your own manager, booker, accountant, merchandiser, website designer, etc.
You do it all and you have to learn it all along the way. Not everyone has that story but a lot of people do. And even when you end up getting bookers and managers there is still a lot of work to do! But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been worth it for me. It’s the one thing that makes the most sense to me and I love doing it, so all the extra work comes naturally to me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.
I specialize in rock music and I’m most known for having a unique voice and occasionally doing pretty loud and sort of 60’s sounding distorted guitar solos. I’m most proud of all the songs that I have made. Every single one feels very special to me and has a special place in my heart.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
Choosing original music as a career is a risk.
So my whole life has been placing a bet on myself. Every time I go on tour I’m taking a risk that will grow my career and put me in a better spot for the next one. But all the years I’ve been touring I could have been working a more stable career and reaching milestones faster, but that’s not the path I chose. I chose the risky one, and to me, it’s the fun one!
