Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexy Burris.
Hi Lexy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started in 2021! I’ve always heard the saying the first two years are the hardest. And I have endured some hardships, but I have learned so much. How I started was last year in Glendale! my aunt in law moved to Egypt for her religious beliefs and so happened to be an aesthetician and loved makeup, so she had every subscription! She asked me if I wanted her makeup and tools, so I bought all of her makeup, skin products, and more for $100 because she needed to get rid of them. My mom looked at me once I was home with the boxes and told me I had no reason not to start! I always believe that endeavors meant for you sometimes fall in your lap. I always did makeup in college just for fun with friends, but then they would ask me for graduations and professional pictures, but I never charged. I truly enjoyed being creative. When I was 24, it fell in my lap to start! So I came up with my brand, brand name, and eyelash line! My parents and some friends always encouraged me to do it for years! After quitting my full-time job as financial aid and academic advisor for master’s and doctorate students, I am now a full-time makeup artist. Technical jobs are not for me, and I love flexibility; I currently work for myself, model, and work with other makeup artists, photographers, and creatives! And I am now attending school to be a certified aesthetician while programming my website for future bookings! I’m so excited!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I always had a confidence issue in knowing I am capable and imposter syndrome. I always think of things on larger scales and how industries work, but I realized I have to figure things out as they come because I can not always think “IF” I must do, even if that means creating an environment for me to focus and feel support. Most of who I am is a survivor and an individual with a work ethic. I have focused so long on who I should be rather than who I want to be because of the people closest to me, but now I know I am worthy of love, happiness, and understanding. I can trust my decisions, and I am now discovering myself and the suppressed emotions I have struggled with for years. My business is the start of me trusting in myself and how my confidence has blossomed thus far.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets me apart is that I am not competitive and want to collaborate with other creatives such as myself. There is so much power in making genuine connections and staying clear of doubt and jealousy. I am most excited about the foreseeable future and all the opportunities I have been offered, especially now that I am on my schedule and get to focus on getting better at one thing. I enjoy bridal makeup, fashion shows, and creative shoot makeup (such as rainbow blush). I have been doing a lot of work with weddings and modeling and learning how to do most updos and Hollywood waves. If I’ve learned anything on this journey, it is always to continue being a student and be a sponge!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My parents & friends deserve a shoutout! They have known and encouraged me to do makeup artistry.
