Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiera Jesslyn.
Hi Kiera, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The preface of my business is to change the photography game; no more waiting weeks upon weeks to receive your gallery, no more stuffy awkward shoots, and no more images you’re not happy with. That’s why it’s called #theELITEexperience! The question I typically get asked from my clients is, ‘Wow, how long have you been doing this?’ My creativity with photography and art goes back to my elementary years. Photography and creating were always a passion for me but were more of a hobby initially.
When the pandemic hit it made me realize I was not ruthlessly chasing my dreams or passions. When the doors of my 9-5 job as an RMT were closed for COVID, I hit the ground running and was determined to change the photography game. I am 100% self-taught, from the ground up. I am thankful for cultivating my entire business and photography niche by trial and error.
I dove full-time into photography in 2019 and built a badass business through the pandemic. I never worked harder in my life than when I was getting Elite built and off the ground. There were sleepless nights, long hours, and literal blood, sweat, and tears. Building something great does not happen overnight. If you’re not ready to learn resilience and work hard as EVER, you will never succeed. Not only in photography; but in any path of life.
As we approach 2024 I am booked months in advance, multi-published, and have clients in every corner of the world. You have to be so unique that people have to search for something different. Your work and client care should speak for themselves. Not only do I focus on delivering outstanding galleries to my clients, but I also ensure that they feel like a rockstar and have fun through the whole process. People may forget what you say, but they will never forget how you made them FEEL, and that is the centerfold of my business. Photography is for everybody.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The process of building my business was not smooth, and I am thankful for that. Improvising and solving were something I learned fast when building Elite Ambitions Photography. Finding your style, workflow, niche, and client base does not come easily, nor does navigating Photoshop or any other techniques required for post-image processing.
Photography is also a huge investment to step into; camera equipment is very expensive and changing your lenses up to keep your work unique is important. But the most important struggle I overcame was doubt. I had so many people doubting me, saying I would never be able to build a career out of it. And I used it all as fuel.
All of the doubters, haters, naysayers, and critics fuelled my fire and kept my focus on success and being the best photographer I could be for my clients. Started from the bottom, single-handedly. A spoon-fed individual will never see eye to eye with the person who had to get it out of the mud.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in creative portraits. I don’t like using the word boudoir because I find it almost has a negative connotation to it, and brings out people’s insecurities. I’m here to encourage people to be bold and show up for themselves; whatever that looks like, and I photograph them doing so. I have a very refined look to my photos, you would be able to pick my work out when you see it.
I am most proud of my ingenuity on set with my ability to pose my clients to create new things instead of repeating typical photos. I am most proud of my client care and ability to make people feel comfortable so they can truly embody a confident personality for their shoot. The confidence and creative spark that transpires in my clients after their shoot is what fuels my tank.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
If you don’t take risks you will never evolve. I am always pushing the boundaries of creativity when trying to create something new. Some concepts I shoot are very bold and I do challenge difficult edits at times to keep things fresh. When it feels scary to jump that is exactly when you jump. Otherwise, you end up staying in the same place your whole life. No risk no story.
