Today we’d like to introduce you to Karunā Anahata Maat or Tyisha.
Hi Karunā, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always been a keeper of safe space. As far back as I remember, my great-grandmother was the home in DC. Everyone would come to eat, rest, and get their mindsets together to go to life again with renewed spirits and hope. When I turned 12, I moved with my birth mother to Queens, NY, and I spent my grade school years allowing everyone to come to my house when things with their parents weren’t the healthiest. My mom wasn’t home much, so as soon as another kid would say they were getting abused or needed any safe space, my house became that for everything under the sun.
As I got older, I went into many logical, practical fields like welding, aeronautical engineering, human resource and business management, English and literature, and theater. In 2015 I had my first experience with homelessness as an adult in my teenage years. I was homeless before I knew it well. But as an adult, I had never been homeless for a 5-year-old. This first experience lasted a year; from the outside looking, that year was so difficult, I slept in my car, Uhaul, hotels Airbnb’s friends’ houses, I was blessed I never had to sleep on the actual streets. At the time, my mindset did not mirror my current sentiments. I was working several jobs selling life insurance, owning two businesses at the time. However, during this time, I learned and grew so much; I found veganism and different modalities in energy healing, and I learned so much about the mindset I was becoming a better me. I got out of that, especially when I changed my mindset and beliefs! Time passed, and homelessness knocked on my door again, but I was a new me this time. I had an entirely new set of beliefs; I no longer believed I had nobody or had to do everything myself, so it was for all two weeks when homelessness happened again!
2020 hits and I’m very aware of myself and my surroundings; during 2020, I could recollect all the space I have held for people and still hold, even in the toughest of times; being deeply understanding has always come so easy to me. So in 2020, in a new apartment, my one-bedroom became the epicenter of healing for friends and family. I conceptualized HoliSpace- Every Space is a Holi Space during this time. I recognize that any circumstance, time, and place allows us to tune in to the divine wisdom. Deep healing can be done in your car because I have experienced it; deep healing can happen in line at the gas station. Deep healing can happen amongst a few seated on the floor in my bedroom. I knew exactly what I needed to do, and I enrolled in Progressive Love Academy’s program to become a UPLVL guide and a 3-way mirror facilitator. Learning these systems changed my life! I knew that nothing in the world fulfilled me more than being of service. In 2021 I left Philadelphia. I packed up my car and daughter with what could fit in my Impala I got at an auction that year for $1000; I left my apartment to a friend and headed for Phoenix! On the way out, I got into a small accident, and a friend said, Tyisha, NO, you’re out of here. I got your leave, so we fixed the fender, and I was on my way with $30! I stopped at the family throughout, and they blessed me. I stopped in NJ to see my dad and in the DMV to see my cousins and aunt, who are more like mother and siblings( I grew up with them! But on the way out, my car breaks down in Dumfries, VA! I was faced with utilizing the mindset tools I had been studying; I created my life! Was I going to stay in a cycle where I believed I didn’t have support? No! So I reached out to the PLA community and got a hotel for that week; my car was getting serviced, and I paid for the car to be fixed. I stopped in every state. After that, I saw family everywhere until I finally reached Arizona.
I met a fantastic person who was highly supportive until we split, and some hardship hit again, and this time I know it is to walk in service. Over the last two years, I have filled myself with the wisdom and experience to move forward, incorporating modalities like PSYCH- K, Yoga Meditation, and much more to support humanity. A walking testament that we do not have to suffer in our hardship if we can look at life for the lessons it serves in remembering ourselves.
HoliSpace was conceptualized to serve humanity by bringing noninvasive healing modalities to underserved communities. By tapping into divine wisdom, we can overcome extreme challenges and shift into a vibration of love and support. We strive to provide a safe space for processing trauma, motivating internal healing, and a space to reconnect with the divine. We believe in community living and support and strive to open a space where families can access many services.
I attend SWIHA for Integrative Healing Arts and end-of-life doula and ordination while finishing my 200 hr yoga teacher and kundalini yoga teacher training through Yogamu. Even currently, we are in a housing transition. At the same time, I maintain a 4.0 GPA as a single mother, working toward my nonprofit, working with clients and families, and working my business. I wrote all of this because it is helpful for me to get all these things out so I can have it for myself. I thank you for this opportunity to share my story and mission! Please Please condense any way you may see fit! Gratitude!
Karunā
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Homelessness, Trauma, Assault, Hardship, Great grandmother raised me until I moved in with my single mother, Homelessness with a child.
Thanks for sharing that. You could tell us more about your work.

We deeply understand how spiritual work on the self can yield beautiful and amazing outcomes for communities. A HoliSpace, we focus on the whole individual, Mind, Body, and Spirit.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Along my journey, the most important lesson I have learned is that everyone needs help along the way, and what we can accomplish as a community in unity is far greater than what we can do alone. I have learned that people can grow and become self-reliant when they have a safe space. Most people do not see themselves, like butterflies spend their lifetimes never seeing their beauty, so humans do not see. It takes a village to see and nurture an individual and inner wisdom to know you need it. For some souls, it is our job to see the hearts of humans so they may not forget their beauty. Everyone deserves a Safe Space.
