Check Out Kalli Stuebe’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalli Stuebe.

Hi Kalli, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I attended Cosmetology school as a high school student in 2006. After graduation and renting a chair in a small salon in my hometown I realized that I wanted more training in order to be the stylist I wanted to be. Just 6 months after turning 18 and becoming licensed I moved to downtown San Fransisco where I assisted for 2 years. I refer to those years as “Grad School for hair”. It was grueling and demanding, I spent more time at one of the 5 salon locations throughout the Bay Area and model hunting downtown than I did in my apartment, but I was also incredibly inspired and use the opportunity to begin developing my craft into what it is today.
Before I was able graduate from assistant to stylist I found out I was having my first child. The industry was a gift that allowed me to be able to pull back and spend time raising my 4 kids while still developing my skill and pivoting to being a bridal stylist.
I moved to AZ in 2016 just 5 weeks after my youngest was born. Once he turned 1 I was ready to level up my career and started working closer to full time with a local salon. I spent 3 years there builIding clientele and leveling up. At that point I was ready to challenge myself again and moved to a higher end salon in Gilbert where I was given different opportunities able to be more involved in managing client satisfaction and their overall experience. After an additional 2 years there I was ready and excited to begin my own journey as an independent stylist. I rented a booth for 1 year before I leased my own space. I love being able to make choices for my clients and myself, making sure they receive the best experience.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey is always full of twists and turns. Having 4 kids 6 and under while building my career. Getting divorced and being a single mom in 2018, while building my AZ business. There is also a personal element to this industry. We are sometimes the only person that will listen or have physical contact with a client that day. People come in with their own positive and/or negative experiences when it comes to their hair and the salon experience. I think developing your own skill and passion for the industry is a challenge on its own, but staying true to that can be challenging. ie: there is always a new trendy thing in the industry and sometimes owners or managers want to rush education to offer that thing. As an independent stylist and owner I believe that staying true to what I have poured hours of passion and time into is what I should be doing behind the chair and finding that space is one of the most challenging aspects of our industry as a whole.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I own a salon suite in Gilbert AZ. My top priority is client education, I only get to do their hair once a month, a quarter, etc, and they need to know what they should be doing in between to feel great about their hair. I specialize in curly hair styling education, shaping and healthy coloring techniques. I have a passion for chemistry and hair structure and use that knowledge to focus on formulas and techniques to maintain hair health. I believe in in-depth consultations at every appointment and transparent expectations. Every experience is tailored to their needs from planing a maintenance schedule that works with their lifestyles to daily management of their hair at home. I work to create a safe environment where all are welcome and don’t feel shamed. (Im also an avid reader so will generally have a book, or 5, to recommend if thats your thing)

What were you like growing up?
I always received “social butterfly” on my report cards in school. I tended to be chatty and a bit loud (that hasn’t changed much) I was in a peer to peer conflict management committee in jr high and loved theater in high school. I always did everyones hair for prom and helped apply everyones box dye. I even remember using purple manic panic to make “highlights” in a friends hair in 4th grade.

Pricing:

  • medium length haircut $75
  • partial highlight $160
