Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Verner
Justin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I suppose my story began when I was twelve years old and was asked what I wanted to do for a living. The first thing that came to my mind was an author. I realized from an early age that I had an active imagination and figured crafting stories would be the perfect outlet. Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park was one of my favorite books and an early inspiration.
As I reached my teenage years, the writing bug was replaced by a love for music. Classic rock was my foundation, and as I formed my own musical identity, I became a huge fan of punk rock. The Ramones, in particular, changed the game for me. When I discovered that a great song could be formed using just three chords, a melody, and a backbeat, I was hooked.
2024 was the year I finally went for it, releasing both my first novel (Jason and Catalina) and debut EP (Mary Jane’s Revenge).
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My artistic journey has been a bumpy one. For years, I kept the music to myself – confined to the walls of my bedroom. The biggest challenge for me has been overcoming self-doubt. My music is quite different from what is currently popular, but that’s what gives it an edge. I am slowly learning how to embrace my individuality.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work, whether in the form of a story or song, is a reflection of my own journey. For example, in my novel, Jason and Catalina, the main character struggles with his faith. He has all the worldly possessions one could ask for, yet he finds himself lonely and unfulfilled. Ultimately, it is the power of faith and love which pull him from his rut.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
The Songwriting Sourcebook: How to Turn Chords Into Great Songs by Rikky Rooksby is by far my favorite book when it comes to learning the art of songwriting. I highly recommend it to any budding tunesmiths.
