Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Smith
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was originally born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I moved to Phoenix back in 2013 for law school. I started rapping in high school and kept with it all the way till I graduated college. I remember burning cds and passing them out in high school and college. During college, I got to open up for Wale and Big Sean during the early parts of their respective careers. Once college was over, I decided to focus on law school and didn’t release any music. Basically I took a three year break. During my music hiatus, my taste in music started to change. I started really caring about what the artist had to say and how the music made me feel. Artist like Drake, Jay Z, Nas, Anita Baker became huge musical inspirations. Already being raised on Tupac, Biggie, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, it just added to my sound. During my last semester of law school, I started to get that “itch” to make music again. So I found some beats, rolled a blunt, and just started writing. I found the confidence to write about my life — even thee ugly parts. It became so therapeutic I just kept writing. I made a promise to myself that I would be true and honest in my music. I make real music with dope lyrics is how I categorize my music now. I released my first project in Phoenix after the three layoff in 2016 called “Flowers For My Pain”. Since, I’ve released numerous of projects and songs, with my most recent projects coming in 2024 — September 28th & The Purpose. Even having a full legal career, I love rapping and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. I look forward to having a blessed year.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My mother struggled with addiction majority of my life. I been without a mother more than I’ve had one. That’s always been a lifetime battle. Moving across country to Phoenix, not knowing anybody and just trying to my footing in a new city with no family.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work in legal counsel for a credit card company and I am a rapper. I am extremely proud of both hats I wear. I know it’s a u I aye combination but I think it describes me well. Book and street smart. Always been that way.
What makes you happy?
Being true to God and myself. It’s the only way to finding true purpose and that brings me true happiness. At least for me.
