Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Makarski.
Hi Joe, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, this is a good question. I have traveled in my converted school bus around the country for several years while meeting many people. This has made me realize that there are many lovely people in this world. From everything that is pumped into our news, one forgets. Realizing how incredibly nice people are and how much they want to help others hit me pretty hard. And I wanted to be able to document those people. Before I knew what I was doing in a grander scope, I was capturing portraits of these people. Now I have a huge library of so many different incredible beautiful everyday people across the western part of the United States. It’s a project that’s continuing to this day.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
It’s been a journey every day. Of course, we all know that owning your own business is a complete roller coaster. There are days, weeks, and even months when you may have tons of work, and then there are times when you’re worried about the next client booking. It’s all part of the journey. One area I could improve on is when I travel to a new town, it’s hard to let customers know I’m a) Left the previous town B) I’m now in the new town. This can be a struggle getting new clients.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been shooting photography for 30 years, capturing everything from the NHL, skateboarding, weddings, portraits, corporate events, and editorials, and even teaching photography classes. Right now, the project I’m most proud of is my “Restoring Faith in Humanity.” project. This project is organically growing into something extraordinary. I’ve been capturing portraits of 1-4 people a day for the 7 months. Some of them are the most incredible people.
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I’ve always been in that mindset. Do what you love doing, and you’ll be successful.
