Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Linstra.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In the fall of 2020, I left my job as an event coordinator for a wedding company. I was applying for jobs and looking for a hobby to keep me busy while I did so. I was obsessed with watching people decorate cookies on Instagram. It was mesmerizing!
I have always had a love for baking and being creative, so I decided to try it myself. I instantly fell in love and wanted to keep practicing and learning more. My close friends and family told me to post some of my Christmas cookies. So many friends loved them too! By Valentines Day of 2021, I had my first cookie orders. From there I started taking custom orders and did pre-sales for more holidays. Now it is my full-time job!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a business is never a smooth road! It is very unpredictable and you have to rely on others to support you.
There are times when I do not have as many orders as I would like. On other weeks I am turning people away. I am currently maxed out in my kitchen which has made it harder to expand. Hopefully, this will change soon and I can accomplish the plans I have.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in decorative sugar cookies! I make custom cookies for any type of event, like baby showers, bridal showers, weddings, birthday parties, holidays, or any other type of celebration.
So many are surprised when they try my cookies. Unlike most decorative sugar cookies, mine are soft and chewy. It is a vanilla cookie with lemon icing. I am a perfectionist, so everything has to meet my very high standards before I give it to my customers.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
I would not consider myself a risk taker. I am an over-thinker and do not make any choices lightly. However, I left my old job fairly quickly without a new job lined up.
This was a huge risk for me, but staying in a job I was not happy at was an even bigger risk. Taking the leap was the best decision. It gave me the time to pursue my passion for baking.
