Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Hamilton.
Hi Ginger, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I got into my signature style of art back in college. I went to a small Liberal Arts school in the Quad Cities out in the Midwest, and the first course I loved taking in college was Typography. That class helped me realize that I wanted to have Graphic Design as my major. Fast forward to my Junior Year, I was the only graphic design major in our Junior Inquiry class with many Fine Arts Majors. We were preparing a gallery for the end of the year, and I was sitting there thinking, “What am I going to do for a gallery?” while sitting among these amazing painters, sculptors, and mixed media artists. So, okay, why don’t I teach myself traditional calligraphy and turn it into something more modern and mainstream? That’s how we got here.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a challenging road. Until November of 2022, I had always just done my art as something on the side, which is a lot easier when you are not relying on the income from your art. Since November of 2022, I have been a full-time artist (which still feels unreal saying out loud), but that has come with its struggles. The obvious ones are creating your income consistently, and the other one that I am noticing is that it is super hard to sit down and work and be creative when your mind sometimes will not cooperate and get into that headspace. But, with all that being said, I am so grateful to wake up every day and do something I am passionate about, even on those tough days.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a very distinct style. Bold, Black, and White are typically large letters that are sometimes hard to read, and I would say I am known for this. People recognize this specific style. I do many things as a creative, from logos and brand design to custom Air Force 1s to home art commissions to T-shirt designs. However, I specialize in creating murals for people solely based on words (of course, we add some color to the murals). Murals are my favorite project to make for people, just because I love being able to transform someone’s space for them. I love that with words on a wall, each person who views those words takes a different meaning away from it, and that is just so cool to me. In addition, I’ve just launched my clothing line, which consists of cool graphic tees I designed, but I am having a blast creating those and bringing them to life. I designed everything by hand and then learned how to screen print at a little local screen printing studio, which was a blast.
Can you talk to us about the role of luck?
I have been fortunate to have met some people, including those who came to me when I was first starting and trusted me to create a mural on their wall with no portfolio. But, I wouldn’t say I think it is so much luck that has played a role in my life and business as much as hard work, getting myself outside of my comfort zone, just trying everything to see what sticks, and eventually doing all these things you start to get lucky a little bit because the opportunities find you. Still, I’m laying the groundwork for them to find me.
