Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabby DelCorso.
Gabby, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Deserted Thrifts was started during the middle of the pandemic in March of 2021. It was after I noticed how little we were able to take care of the planet while Covid-19 was happening that I thought of this venture. I wanted to make sure that even though it might be hard to reduce your footprint in a time of single-use products that there were still ways to choose more sustainable actions. That is when my thrifting business really took flight, it was a way for me to reduce the waste entering landfills while being able to curate other people’s closets. I wanted others to see how secondhand clothing is not a gross thing, it’s actually extremely rewarding in many cases! There are so many beautiful vintage and modern pieces just waiting for a second chance and I wanted to be the one to make that a bit easier. Since then, I have made my shipping materials plastic-free and recyclable, I have sold over 300 pieces, and have explored the world of secondhand home decor at my in-person markets.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing is a smooth road! It was challenging starting a business in the midst of a pandemic, people have other issues to worry about and that makes it hard to find the right clientele. However, I have made commitments to be very active on my social media and really connect with those who follow me. I have built a great base of customers who shop with me regularly from being personal with everyone I meet! Other struggles along the way have been the way social media treats businesses, it’s been hard to build a following because of certain algorithms in place. As a completely online business there are not many other options for exposure.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My main career right now is in the Interior Design industry. I have been working closely with great designers for about a year now while finishing my Bachelor’s at Arizona State. The industry for me has taught me a great amount about creativity, innovation, problem-solving, and more. Being in this field has let me truly have a special eye when it comes to secondhand sourcing, I see visions in things that some might not get from simply looking at the rack, and curating select goods is something I have become quite good at over time.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Being authentic is the way to be successful in my eyes. I want those who shop with me to know that everything I source and bring into my shop is something I would own in my own closet. I want to be real with my customers and build that connection with them. Being authentic truly sets you apart in a world where social media is so competitive and can often lack originality.
Pricing:
- Items in my shop are often $50 and under! In rare cases, I sell truly one-of-a-kind vintage pieces that may cost a bit extra.
