Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. T Ayela-Uwangue.
Hi Dr. T, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I opened Healing Touch Direct Primary Care on February 1, 2023, to offer people the best medical care I can. Over the years, I had lost my way in medicine. After several years in practice, I learned how difficult it is to be able to take care of my patients with the way things are set up in the “medical world.” High numbers of patients, limited time with each one, unable to provide the deserved quality; it was painful. I tried different environments, but it was the same each time. I became disillusioned and discouraged and considered leaving medicine. About one year ago, I thought, “Why not just open a practice of my own?” I searched solo practice and came across the term “direct primary care,” I immediately felt my zeal for medicine return. I could open my practice after further research and asking plenty of questions. I fell in love with the concept of direct primary care because it brings back the role of traditional primary care in a modern way in the form of monthly membership. Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a model of medical practice that brings the medical relationship where it should be: directly between the patient and the Physician, without relying on insurance.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect.
It was not a smooth road, but I am still grateful for the lessons learned. How to run a business was something I needed to gain knowledge in. Even though I had worked in a few clinics and knew how to run a medical practice, it is different when you are on your own, mainly when not operating in the standard, fee-for-service, insurance-based care practices. Learning the various regulations and requirements was also another struggle. Thankfully, many others practice in the direct primary care model, and that community has been an excellent source of information and mentoring.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a physician, double board certified in Internal (adult) medicine and Pediatrics. I can care for all ages, from complex medical conditions to routine preventative care. I like getting to know my patients personally, understanding them, and using that information to help in their medical care. I also love to teach and help people understand the source of the problem and work on preventing illness and injury.
Let’s end by discussing what matters most to you and why.
What matters most to me is practicing medicine in a way that allows me to provide high-quality, compassionate care while still having time for my number 1 priority: my family. The DPC model will enable me to do both.
