Check Out Damon Logan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Damon Logan.

Damon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
So music for me started at a young age. My parents had my sister and I in church and if we weren’t singing in the choir, we were listening to gospel, and if I wasn’t singing in the choir, then I was rapping in a Christian group at church. We were both a part of our church’s step team and my sister did praise dance and eventually went on to graduate from the University of Utah with a modern dance major. Needless to say, the arts have been a big part of our family life.

Once I graduated high school, I decided I wanted to step away from the Christian rap group and pursue a solo, secular rap career. It was tough being a solo act without a team behind me. I wanted my music to really blow up so I studied other artists and tried to emulate them. I noticed that whether or not the music was good, there was a recurring theme to their success and that was that they had a successful brand. I took that and formed Against All Odds, which is the brand behind all the merch and labels I release music under.

After years of making music, I always noticed a subtle progression in the furthering of my brand and the reach of my music yet still felt like it should have been making a bigger impact.

Earlier in the year, both my parents had passed from coronavirus. It has hands down been the most difficult time of both my sister and mine’s lives.

Despite the hardship, it has taught us to pursue our dreams. One thing our mom instilled in us is the ability to dream and have goals because she too did. Not much longer after their passing, I decided to quit my full-time corporate job making music and my brand my main focus. One can only imagine having to grieve the loss of their parents to then compound that with the stress of no longer having a consistent paycheck, but this has been the most rewarding thing I’ve done. I know what I’m doing and how I’m going about it would make both Manuel and Teresa proud, the two best parents I could’ve ever asked for.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
That’s the thing about pursuing music. Nothing’s easy. The easiest part may be making the actual music. That’s 10% of it. Starting out, getting people to listen to your music as a ‘nobody’ was tough. Why would they take time out of their day to listen to someone who was probably really bad. That’s always the biggest hurdle initially.

Now, I think it’s the same, but trying to get more listeners once you’ve already attained the ones you have now is overwhelming. Feels like you’ve hit sort of a plateau.

Financing your music is also tough because it’s not just the music you have to fund. Recording and studio time, but then also paying for beats or music clearance. Paying for visuals, promo, artwork, merchandise, designs, every step of the way there’s a cost.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an artist. I primarily make and write music. My lyrical ability along with the relatability of my lyrics have always been something people gravitate towards me for. Outside of music, I always have merch that I usually sell alongside a project or single depending on what said single is. I usually also offer visuals for a project or song, so I feel like when you receive a release from Damon Logan, you’re getting a packaged deal. That’s what I feel has separated myself from others.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I never would’ve considered myself a risk taker before. I was very timid and also very calculated, but that worked against me. I operated out of fear of failure. Risk is important and pertinent to the success of anyone, especially a creative. Risk is the only way for you to progress and reach your highest potential.
