Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Saubon.
Hi Cheryl, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Ever since high school/college and first getting familiar with beauty brands and makeup, I’ve always been that go-to friend for makeup application. Whatever the occasion, whether it was for a girls’ night out to special events like weddings, my friends were always soliciting my help and advice. A few years ago, I was talking to a friend about my passion for makeup and she sparked the idea of “Why don’t you start doing makeup as a side gig?” And the rest was history! I’ve worked for beauty brands such as Bare Minerals and Bobbi Brown, where I have undergone numerous trainings and made awesome connections with people in the beauty industry. I am currently a Freelance Makeup Artist and I also work at makeup studio in Old Town Scottsdale called The Sparkle Bar. At The Sparkle Bar, I work with an elite team of other Makeup Artists coming from different backgrounds in the beauty industry with over 50 years of experience combined!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some struggles I’ve encountered was getting my name out there and building myself as a Freelance Makeup Artist. The beauty industry can get pretty competitive so learning how to develop and grow as a makeup artist and setting yourself apart from just “another makeup artist” by creating your own style has been a challenge that I’m learning to overcome in different ways. Additionally, when Covid-19 hit and everyone was in quarantine, it was difficult to keep appointments booked and I felt like that was the longest break I had from doing any makeup at all. Now that everything is getting back to normal, that experience has taught me how to work with clientele in a new type of situation and emphasized the importance of sanitation, which is something I’ve always placed as a higher level of priority every time I am with a client.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I offer makeup application services for any type of special occasion or event. I also offer one-on-one trainings for those who want to learn the basics of makeup, how to apply certain products, and which products/brands to buy, etc. I think what I’m known for goes hand in hand with what I’m most proud of. I’ve been with my makeup studio, The Sparkle Bar, since 2019, and all the things I’ve learned, the connections I’ve made with my team, and amazing people who I’ve met through clientele has been such a rewarding experience thus far. The Sparkle Bar has been a huge part of developing who I am as a freelance makeup artist while still being part of an incredible and talented team. The Sparkle Bar has opened the doors to events and experiences that I could never have imagined to be a part of. For the past three years, I have been able to grow as a makeup artist and see the The Sparkle Bar evolve and thrive as a business in the beauty industry. I’m so thankful that when people hear or see my name, I’m known for being part of The Sparkle Bar as well. Furthermore, looking back at the companies I have worked for, the trainings I have taken, the photoshoots/events I have been involved in, and the connections I have made with people along this journey is what I am most proud of because it all started with a “what if?” and I actually made it happen.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
It surprises a lot of people when they find out what I do for my full-time career. I am a 911 Communications Dispatcher for one of our local police departments in the valley. I can honestly say it is very rewarding to acquire the skill to do both jobs. It’s the complete opposite of what I do part-time as a makeup artist but they just balance each other out perfectly when it comes to my personal life.
