Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Russell.
Hi Charlie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Animaru Maid Café was born as a performance group influenced by the maid cafés of Japan. My love of Japanese culture began in early childhood and blossomed after I joined my first maid café group in 2013. The core concept of a maid café is to offer a unique experience of service done by adorable maids who brighten your day with a little bit of magic.
As my love of this niche community grew and more and more themed maid café groups began to pop up, I soon realized that the core structure of a maid café can draw influence from just about anything, and the idea to combine my lifelong passion for activism and animal welfare with my budding adoration of maid cafés came to be. Having already established connections within the local anime community, finding venues to host our events was easy.
Several of my close friends agreed to help, and for the most part, things just kind of fell into place. As many small business owners know, money is one of the biggest hurdles when starting your business, and all our start-up costs came out of my own pocket. I never planned for Animaru to be a profitable business, as the idea was always to have at least 50% of our proceeds go towards charity and the rest go back into future events.
I wore a lot of hats in the beginning, functioning as our sole event coordinator, finance manager, seamstress, choreographer, social media manager, and more, but as our team has grown, I have been able to delegate tasks to other members of the group and lessen the burden on myself.
Animaru just passed the 5th anniversary of our official debut this past April! We wouldn’t be where we are now without the overwhelming support of our local community, including business partners, fans, and patrons!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have certainly been a variety of obstacles over the past 5 years of operation, but I have been grateful for the lesson each of these struggles had to teach. The biggest struggle that I think we all had to navigate was the 2020 pandemic outbreak and subsequent quarantine. As a performance-based group, our activity was reduced nearly to zero once all of our contracted events were canceled for at least a year.
Like many other groups in our niche, we turned to virtual content such as live streams and pre-recorded performances. Not only did we remain active, but turning to the internet also helped us grow our following and taught our team the importance of flexibility in this kind of space. Through virtual content alone, we were able to raise over $1,200 for a variety of charities.
As a volunteer-based group, we have a lot of team members come and go in a short amount of time. Navigating the change of staff, training new members, and taking the time to learn everyone’s strengths has definitely been challenging as the leader of a large and very active team. Structurally, we have had to adjust our mode of operation as our team grew from the core 5 we started with to now over 20 permanent and temporary staff members.
On a personal level, my health has been my biggest hurdle, as I am a disabled individual with a litany of chronic illnesses. There have certainly been times when I pushed my body a little too hard and suffered the consequences afterward, and as I near my 30s, I’ve come to find that my recovery time has grown longer, and I can’t afford to push myself as hard as I did in my late teens and early 20s.
Distributing tasks among my staff members has definitely helped me prolong the effects of burnout, but there are oftentimes when I feel I have bit off more than I could chew, and I just have to pump the breaks.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a business owner, I have become a jack of all trades, learning to navigate public relations, accounting and budgeting, team management, and much more, but my main passion has always been music and dance. Running a maid café offers a unique opportunity to dive headfirst into theatrics while maintaining a strong and organized business structure. Getting into the uniform is like putting on a character.
I get to become a heightened version of myself and share my love of performing with the community. I am a classically trained dancer and musician. I trained in ballet, jazz, and lyrical styles from a young age, took vocal lessons, and taught myself how to play a few instruments as well. Being able to showcase these passions within the café space has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I am honored to offer the opportunity for other artists to do the same.
From a more traditional business standpoint, my meticulous organizational skills and ambition to succeed have allowed me to gain success in this niche. I would say I am relatively well known in the community as a veteran maid who is willing to share their knowledge and help others find fulfillment and success with their own café group.
Above all, I am incredibly proud of my resilience. During my 11 years in this industry, there were many times when I wanted to throw in the towel, where quitting would have been easier than pushing through the hard stuff, but I kept going. I know that when push comes to shove, I will find a way to make things happen, and I am eternally grateful to my team for their patience and flexibility.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I don’t know that I necessarily believe in luck; rather, I believe in karma. Whatever you put into the world, you will get back, and I’ve tried to maintain a positive outlook on things, no matter the circumstances. I’m sure that there are people who would say that I got lucky during my career in the maid café business, and I can’t entirely discount that idea, but I do think that I have achieved the degree of success that I deserve.
Despite the outward appearance of pink bows and cute accessories, a lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into making Animaru what it is today. Everything from the notoriety of our name to the expansion of our team, and the thousands of dollars we have raised for charity was earned by the hard work of my team and myself.
