Check Out Camaira Metz’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camaira Metz.

Hi Camaira, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Music runs in my family. My grandmother was a jazz singer, and I think I really take after her the most. I started out with musical theatre and taking piano lessons when I was around 7. I immediately knew that it brought me joy and that I wanted to get good at it. I didn’t really find my singing voice until I was around 12. Once I entered high school, I was immediately involved in every single choir, and thrived in my school’s vocal jazz choir, where I was given the Ella Fitzgerald award.

It wasn’t until my senior year, that I finally sat down with my brand new guitar, to write a song for my mom on her 50th birthday. The writing process didn’t come naturally to me. I was sucked into community college and dropped out a few years later. It took another 4 years for me to actually write another song. I moved to Boston in 2019, and something just clicked. I don’t know if it was the new surroundings/scenery or what, but I was a songwriting machine.

Whether they were good or not, I just had so many ideas. When the pandemic rolled around, I decided to move back to my hometown of Seattle to be close to family. Even though the world stopped, my creativity didn’t. I wrote my first ever original EP during lockdown and when things were a bit safer, got to record it with an amazing friend of mine. After releasing the EP, “Say Less More” in May 2021, I was given the opportunity to perform my originals to a sold out crowd in July. Since then, I’ve been even more inspired to continue writing and collaborate with new people. My two new singles “Daydreams” and “Moonstruck” will be on all streaming platforms soon. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road. If there was a queen of self doubt, I’d have that crown. All artists compare themselves to others, it’s just what you do.

But there was a time where I thought I was going to give up altogether. I had so many people in my life telling me to be “realistic” and that I needed to finish college in order to get a real career. I was in a pretty deep state of depression for a while. I was feeling incredibly stuck and like I wasn’t going anywhere. I almost went back to school for graphic design, and while I have such a strong appreciation for it, it’s just not my passion. Music is my passion. So getting back on track was an absolute journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer/songwriter. I like to say I “genre bend” because I’m still trying to figure out what exactly my genre is. I know it will always continue to evolve. I think I incorporate some alternative r&b, jazz, pop, and soon a little neo funk! I am most comfortable on my keyboard, but can also play the guitar and electric bass. I’m most proud of my “Say Less More” EP. Although, the music I’m releasing soon might be even better. I’m constantly looking for new ways to challenge myself and bring something new to the table.

What does success mean to you?
Success is getting to a point where you are so happy and proud to share your work with the world. I think it’s that simple.
