Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Peo.
Hi Brenda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in the Chicago area but grew up in the desert Southwest… first in Tucson and now live along the San Pedro River in St. David, AZ… The influence of the southwest can be seen throughout my artistic career whether in jewelry designs or now my paintings. In 2008, after a successful 25 yr. career where I developed my own line of contemporary SW style jewelry and selling through art festivals and shops throughout the SW states… I finally listened to my inner voice and started painting. from my bio sheet… “Although oil painting was a new medium for her, Brenda quickly became adept at capturing the quirky traits and personality infused expressions of her favorite subject, animals. Having had horses all her life and living on a working cattle ranch in Southeastern AZ… painting animals was a natural extension of her personality and lifestyle. A self-taught artist, Brenda’s unique style quickly earned her a devoted following and her artwork is being enjoyed throughout most of the US…”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Sorry that I didn’t listen to my inner voice much sooner… I always knew that there was an artist inside but didn’t listen… even though I was always practicing my signature… until my jewelry business turned into a job… the creativity and the thrill was gone. So finally, I bought paint and brushes… quickly realizing that I was terrible at cleaning brushes so I turned to using the palette knife with oil paints… I love how they squish and smoosh… When I first started, I wanted to be a realistic painter… but that just wasn’t happening. My animals soon started taking on a life of their own… a fun… creative blend of realism and impressionism… with a big dash of humor. I really love seeing the look on people’s faces when they come into my booth… or see my giclees at a shop… they look at Clemmie… or Mork and Mindy… and can’t help but smile and laugh… and everyone seems to have a donkey story to share with me… I love it… My own quirkiness comes through with my quirky characters…
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My painting are all animals… the quirkier the better…
