Today we’d like to introduce you to AZ Deadpool.
Hi AZ, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
So this all started back in early 2016. The Deadpool movie had just landed in theaters and I decided that I wanted to cosplay. I already had a mask made (shoutout to Todd Cook) and it just went on from there. From there, it was just a matter of finding someone that could put together a suit for me, because I can’t sew to save my life. Another shoutout to @kymchicos on Instagram. From there, it was just making appearances at conventions and things like that. I have made a lot of friends because of this hobby and even met my significant other well shout out to @tic.tac.toad on Instagram. She’s absolutely amazing.
2019 is when I introduced my Spider-Man suit and that has been an insane amount of fun. Seeing kids’ faces when they see me in a full Spidey suit is just the best. I was just recently asked to appear at a birthday party and it was entirely wholesome. To be able to interact with kids is the best. Especially when they have that confused look on their face of “I didn’t think you actually existed!” So if you’re looking for a Spider-Man to make an appearance, I’d be happy to do so. Cosplaying has been incredibly rewarding and I can’t see where else it takes me. The next goal would be to be recognized by Marvel or Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool 3 was just announced so I can be invited to the premiere, I think I’d faint.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s not always a smooth road for sure. There are always going to be bumps here and there. I know something I still struggle with is self-worth. More specifically when it comes to self-worth. Constantly comparing myself to other cosplayers and things like that is a constant. It shouldn’t be the case, but it does happen. The important thing is to remember that we’re all nerds that are celebrating our fandoms.
That and also when your cosplay decides to rebel against you at a convention is a struggle too. I try not to compare myself too much to others because some people have the talent to sew and other people have the money to be able to buy higher-end cosplay items as well. The important thing to do is to remember that as long as you’re having fun, that’s all that matters. Cosplay is for everyone and everyone should have fun with it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So maybe this is a little bit of an identity crisis but I don’t necessarily consider myself an artist but I do see where it would be qualified. So maybe yes maybe no? Haha. I guess I can say that I have done some mashups with Deadpool; I’ve done one where I’ve done Negan (from the show The Walking Dead) and I have also done a mashup of the red power ranger from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (I absolutely grew up watching that as a kid and was sucked in).
But I think the one mashup that I’m most proud of would be my Sailor Moon/Deadpool mashup. The amount of people that immediately see and either smile or just laugh right away is just so rewarding. I go all in too with the outfit with a skirt and the super long wig as well. It’s very warm but very worth it. Other than that, I do dabble in editing photos as well. Over the last couple of years, I have essentially taught myself how to use Photoshop. I’m still learning but I think I have the basics and whatnot down pretty good now. It’s a lot of fun to edit photos and take something and completely make it something entirely new and different.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I think the biggest piece of advice would be to just do what makes you happy. Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Just cosplay what you like and have fun with it. At the same time, don’t be rude or disrespectful either.
Unfortunately, there are those who will use the opportunity to become a different character and be rude. Also, know that it doesn’t matter where you get your cosplay from.
Whether it’s made personally by yourself or if it’s bought. It 100% does not matter where it comes from. Just as long as you’re having fun with it. On top of that, if you start to get a lot of recognition, don’t let it consume you. At the end of the day, we’re all the same. We’re all human. So yeah, just have fun. Take a chance with a cosplay that you’re not sure about. Chances are, it’s gonna catch the eye of someone and they’ll get excited.
