Check out Negus Jrmusic’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Negus Jrmusic.

Negus, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I fell in love with music from a young age of 5. I grew up in a musical family. My mother used to sing in the church I grew up around a diverse style of music such as reggae and dancehall thanks to my father. I became fascinated with hip hop when I was a freshman in high school. My friends and I used to hang out in a mini recording studio in the basement of our school back in Brooklyn. At the age of 14, I recorded my first song. As my family relocated to the Poconos, I started creating more music independently out of my bedroom. During this time I was also singing in musicals and sang at venues as prestigious as the Apollo. At the age of 17, I relocated to Arizona and met a group of friends in college. We formed a music group called “Chrome Music Group” when I was a freshman at UAT. We used to record music and shoot home videos throughout the night in the school’s DV lab then go to the class in the mornings. By the time I was a senior in college I was working on my own solo album which I released in 2016. At this same time, I learned the art of music production after taking up residency at WildFire Studios here in Phoenix. I enjoyed the art of composing my own pieces and produce a wide arrange of my current work. I enjoy what I do.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I rap, sing and produce music. I aspire to create a movement that represents self-confidence, freedom of self, and royalty. I go by the name of Negus Jrmusic on stage. The name Negus is a royal title in the Ethiopian Semitic languages. A Negus is a King. Jrmusic is a sort of portmanteau of my first and last name initials and my profession “music.” I believe that everyone possesses some type of royalty in them and when someone listens to the music I hope that people take away a message of power, love, positivity, and greatness. I feel like in the hip hop space today a lot of the music is negative. The message is toxic, and I want to shape that up a bit. I want to show the world that it’s possible to make feel good music that doesn’t sound for lack of better words “corny.” My vision is to change the narrative.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I think the role of artists has changed a lot today. We currently live in a world where music is a huge influencer of pop culture. No longer do we rely on News media to shape the cultural landscape. For the past decades, music has been the main driving force in the evolution of society. Artists today have the power to create a movement, influence the public opinion, and be the ultimate leaders. In my art, I try to embrace “black empowerment.” I feel that teaching the next generation that it is ok to be “black” and that there is a lot of power and prestige in being black is important. For too long black people have been portrayed negatively in the media and I want to change the image of the black community. Show the world that we are more than just criminals, entertainers and ball players. It’s ok to be black doctors, and lawyers and entrepreneurs. It’s not lame to embrace “black excellence.” I aspire to be a leader for my community and use my music as my outlet to spread this productive movement.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
