Today we’d like to introduce you to Montigue Eaton.
Montigue, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Every person has a difficult time finding their own path and mine was no exception. Born on the spectrum and with a kidney problem…I’ve always stood out like a sore thumb. And although I never went to art school, I have had no shortage of magnificent teachers, who also thought outside of the box, and saw my disabilities as a very unusual gift. Engineers, nurses, choreographers, stage designers etc. have given me the understanding of how important self-discipline is, while showing me that a unique perspective is worth the pain. My step-grandfather also taught me how to teach myself, and how to figure out a solution every time based off of the resources around me. With that, I have moved from realistic portraits, to expressive abstractions, from massive freehand murals to intricate carvings. Each time I like to use other people’s aesthetics to dictate the style.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Movement and expression, chaos and organization, sensuality and family. My work has a lot of variety and each piece appeals to a different audience. All of my work is freehand, so that I can express my feelings while I work. Usually in acrylics. I range from large landscapes, to cultural symbology, and musing portraits. Some pieces even have all of these elements at once. My themes are diverse… but at the core, is equality and strength through the most trying of times. I believe that there is beauty in pain, and strength in making mistakes. And through it all, an honest eye is my most important tool.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Techniques can be learned over time. Expression is about confidence in your own unique perspective.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have work spanning the entire southwest, mostly murals in Santa Fe, Sedona, Prescott, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Taos, Bisbee, and more. My work can be found on my Instagram and Facebook. With work for sale on my etsy.
