Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Schons.
Molly, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have had a love of photography ever since I was a kid. I remember this photo, my dad, when I was a kid of waves crashing around a rock off the coast of Rhode Island, and I think it’s what really sparked my interest. From then on I remember having a camera in my hand ready to capture everything I possibly could through my lens, but my professional journey didn’t really start until late in college.
After years in a major I wasn’t happy in, I decided to switch schools and shift my focus to journalism. I joined the school newspaper and magazine shortly after and then really fell in love. Once I realized I realistically could do this for the rest of my life, I was hooked. I started going to every event I could and branched out into portraits and real estate photography in my free time.
Over the last few years, I have really developed my style as a photographer and found new passions to follow. I have traded a newsroom for the great outdoors. Now I spend most of my free time hiking and exploring with my camera in hand trying to capture the natural beauty of the world and all of the people in it.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m a photographer and focus on capturing the natural beauty of the world and the people in it. In an age of airbrushing and filters, I want to remind people that the world is beautiful all on its own. We don’t need filters to make a sunset beautiful, or airbrushes to make our bodies beautiful, the world is beautiful all on its own. I hope that when people see my photos, they see the natural beauty in the landscapes, people, and animals and realize this world is still wonderful without filters.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I think the biggest challenge facing artists today is just getting out there. While I love technology, with the way that cell phone cameras are improving it can be hard to make a dent in a world where everyone has a camera in the palm of their hand at all times. I feel like it makes it more of a challenge to make a name for yourself and your work.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Right now my artwork is primarily displayed on my Instagram as well as my website. I am really just getting started on this leg of my professional journey and am new to the Phoenix photography world. I hope to continue to branch out into local events in the next few months, but until then, my artwork can be supported by following my Instagram, booking me for a photo shoot or just spreading the word. I love Phoenix and can’t wait to see what this city has in store for me.
