Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Ross.
Meg, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
A shy, introverted grade schooler is handed a disposable camera at a family gathering and the rest is current history. Since that day I had a camera in front of my eyeball around others and being an introvert, I enjoyed being involved in what was happening without actively participating in the moment.
Fast forward to post-high school in Seattle and my first taxes out on my own – I used most of my refund to purchase my first point & shoot, a little Casio I nicknamed Cassie. She went with me everywhere and I began documenting the world around me, a little urban in nature. It wasn’t until I moved here to Phoenix in 2008 that I bought my big girl DSLR and decided that photography was the career tugging at my heart and soul. After that moment whenever I received a compliment for a photo that I shared my immediate response was, “Oh, that was just a LUCKY shot….”, and so The Lucky Shot Photography was born.
Of course, that isn’t my response anymore. My craft is special and unique; after years of exploring different specialties life has pushed and guided me down the path of documenting motherhood and growing families.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Creating art for Motherhood + Birth is truly a labor of love (pun always intended). I attended my first home birth almost exactly 4 years ago and I was immediately hooked by the beauty and strength I witnessed. But…I got pregnant and nothing halts a career quite like having your own baby. The universe had a different plan for me and I experienced a plus size pregnancy with care at a local birth center that ended in a hospital transfer. While I wasn’t the stereotypical picture-perfect mom I truly believe that this experience shaped the photographer that I am today. Last year I came back in full force dedicated to documenting baby bumps and birth. I can now relate to so many moms and families because of the dual holistic and hospitalized care that I received. Moving from pregnancy on through birth my photos send a message that this family is strong, beautiful, and most importantly, UNIQUE. I am wholly invested in their story.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success for me isn’t “likes” or “followers”. I feel the most pride when a birth mom has just seen her first images and takes the time (because we all know you don’t have any of that with a newborn!) and posts online about how happy she is that she chose to have me share her birth space. Success is connection, don’t think about your competition and focus on the experience.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Birth is still a growing industry, but motherhood is timeless. Most of my work comes through referrals and word of mouth from parents who want the world to hear their story. Instagram is the easiest place to see my day-to-day and experience a slice of birth photographer life. Please follow and comment if a photo moves you! My heart is full when I hear from fellow moms and parents who relate to the story I’m sharing.
