Check out Lucy Williams’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Williams.

Lucy, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
The journey to starting my own little business has been a long one. I was raised by two “makers” and have always enjoyed working with my hands. I have loved woodworking for many years as a hobby. I have created a wide variety of items. My favorite is probably the custom teardrop trailer/camper that I built.

This was made to travel across the country. Unfortunately, life has thrown us some curve balls and our travel has been limited. This past year my spouse fell ill with colon cancer, and I started building obsessively. This became my therapy. I loved taking rough, “ugly” wood and making beautiful pieces. This gave me hope that my “ugly” situation could improve. My love is now in remission (YAY!!), and life is improving. I am now building for pleasure (and to pay off medical bills) and sharing my work with others online as well as at markets here in the valley.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I love lumber! I love the smells, the texture, and the unique grains that assure that no two pieces are the same! I really enjoy using a wide variety of species with vibrant colors. I make custom wooden jewelry including rings and necklaces. I really enjoy making custom rainbow/LGBTQ+ jewelry to serve members of my community. I love making quality, classy options with subtle rainbows. We really enjoy paddle boarding, so I make a lot of paddle/surfboard pendants. I am also a guitar player, so I enjoy making guitar pick pendants. I make a lot of jewelry to serve the general population too. Additionally, I make cutting boards, wall art, bud vases, candle holders, decorative boxes, etc. Basically, if it is made from wood, I am in!

The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
That is a wonderful question, one that I probably need advice on too! I have a career as an Exercise Physiologist, so my art is a side business. For me, not creating is not an option! I need a creative outlet to stay balanced in life. You have to make your health a priority, and creating is a large part of that for me. Find the balance between creating and paying the bills is always a struggle. Work hard and use the challenges in life to inspire you.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I will be at 6th Street Market in Tempe most Sundays. My website is www.thelwoodbylucy.com. You can even watch a tour of my teardrop camper here: https://youtu.be/us8o8eNV9To. Or follow me on Facebook: The L Wood by Lucy or Instagram: thelwoodbylucy.
