Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan O’Neil.
Logan, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m not really sure if I have a story. I’ve been drawing and writing poems and songs since I could hold a pen, but I don’t really feel like I’ve put enough out there yet to call myself an artist. I’ve just been trying to make what I like and share it more often. I’m still writing the story, I suppose.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Lately, I’ve been really interested in combining poetry and illustration. I’m interested in what can be communicated through a combination of mediums, and how we translate the verbal to the visual (and vice versa.) A Welsh poet I deeply respect once told me my work was “rather goth,” and I feel like that is the best way to describe it. (Her name is Karen Gemma Brewer- check her out!)
I just hope people connect to what I’m saying, even if it is a little macabre at times. I think life can be a little macabre. I always want my statement to be honest.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I think the biggest challenge facing artists today is carving out the space to share our work. In an age where rapidly advancing technology only oils the capitalist machine, there is more competition to establish oneself as a working artist than ever before. However, that also means it’s easier to share work than ever before.
I do not believe art should be a competition. I believe it should be a conversation; a collaboration. We need to create more solid communities of artists and creatives so that we all have a platform to share our work, regardless of what oppresses us or deters us from achieving a Westernized concept of success.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Right now, I’m mostly just posting it on Instagram! I’m always down to make prints, and prices are always negotiable. Just send me a DM! You can find my zine, /messy bitch/ at the LA Zine Fest on May 26 (and probably later on Instagram as well.) I’ve also been working on a couple of music projects with friends, and I’m learning how to tattoo, so definitely keep an eye out for that!
I’m always willing to collaborate and try new things, so if anyone reading this is in need of any kind of creative work, please email me. I’m extremely flexible and very fun. Thank you.
