Today we’d like to introduce you to Leon Jurgens and Ariella Rosin.
Leon and Ariella, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Like many of our family, we had a passion for photography. Given the opportunity, we’d run out the film in a disposable so fast, we’d always have a backlog of cameras to develop! Growing up in Southern California, we had the unique opportunity to capture everything – from desert landscapes to cold and lonely beaches and everything in between. When we moved to Arizona in 2006, Ariella attended a Performing Arts high school and was the catalyst to our beginnings. She shared her passion and technique with me (Leon) and we began booking shoots for family and friends. Next thing we knew, we assumed the moniker “BASS” (Bro and Sis Snapshots) because of our childhood way of malapropping the word in lieu of the bass clef in music. While our moniker has the clef, we still hold true to our silly ways and call ourselves by the freshwater fish’s name!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Being a team, we hold on to our specialties and bring them together in our shoots. Ariella is incredible with portraits drawing on her expertise in hair and make-up and when we’re shooting portraits or families, I take secondary and capture the moments candidly while she focuses on the poses. This allows us to capture everything! When we’re out and about exploring and adventuring, I take primary and channel my inner “Ansel Adams” and Ariella will capture the “behind-the-scenes”. We convey the uniqueness of our subjects, be it a person, family, or landscape. Every one we capture and everything we shoot is unique in that moment and we want to be able to share that experience and re-live it with others for time to come!
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
Like many photographers before us, our job is never done! With the advent of powerful smartphone cameras in recent years, there’s no shortage of photos out there, but there’s always something to capture! One key success metric for us is composition. We continually learn new ways to compose a shot. We believe the hunger for learning is key in our success. We may master a skill but will continue to hone in on it while taking on newer challenges.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Our presence online is only just getting started – with our Instagram (@bass snapshots), but we hope to showcase our work on our very own website very soon!
