Today we’d like to introduce you to Krisie Ramsey.
Krisie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Creativity definitely runs in my bloodlines. I was introduced to art by my mother, renowned batik artist, Katalin Ehling, who always encouraged me to unleash my creativity, regardless of medium, and supports my artistic endeavors today. In addition to her, my grandfather was a sculptor, and my aunt is a well-known artist. Growing up in an artistic family, I became imaginative at a very young age.
In high school, I dabbled in drawing and batik. My freshman year of college, I attended Arizona State University, where I majored in art. One of my favorite electives was a beginning photography class. The various assignments and the ability to process film in the dark room captivated me. Although I switched majors after my freshman year from art, to majoring in Graphic Communications, photography continued to fascinate me. After graduating college, I worked for a printing company in California and moved back to the valley in 1993 to marry my husband, Dave. After having two children, I became a stay at home mom for many years. Currently, they are both young adults and have moved away from home. Having experienced a bit of empty nest syndrome, I was in need of a hobby. This is how my renewed interest in photography began.
After purchasing a newer lens last fall, my husband surprised me with a membership to the Desert Botanical Garden, in Phoenix, where I became inspired to photograph hummingbirds. We have since created a hummingbird oasis in our backyard, where I take most of my shots, but also enjoy traveling throughout Arizona to photograph different species. I find photographing hummingbirds very therapeutic and a good way to de-stress. With the encouragement of family and friends, I have taken my photography a step further, turning my hobby into an art.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Hummingbirds are amazing little creatures and can be quite entertaining. My photography focuses on their whimsical nature, endearing personalities, colorful gorgets, and their tiny stature. My photos are taken hand held with a 200mm lens, in a natural setting with natural lighting. Even though I may not have the best equipment, I’ve learned to make something special out of each photo through the editing process. My main subject is the bird itself, focusing primarily on their tiny head and body, while allowing their wings and background to remain out of focus.
The true goal of my work is to spread happiness. If anything, I encourage my viewers to appreciate nature and enjoy life’s simple little pleasures. I continue to explore the possibilities with my photography. Having sold several prints, in addition to note cards and art tiles, I am currently experimenting with incorporating my hummingbird photography into collages with acrylic paints.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
There is no defined age to start pursuing your creative journey. Sometimes life gets in the way, but take the time to revisit an old hobby and explore your interests.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My photography can be viewed on Instagram and I am in the process of creating a website. The best way to show support of my work would be to follow me on Instagram and share my gallery with others. I am always open to feedback and comments.
