Check out Kelley Dillon’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelley Dillon.

Kelley, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in Massachusetts and loved art for as long as I can remember. I was always tearing our house apart and making messes with all my projects. There was never really a time where I stopped making art, but I ended up studying journalism in college. I taught myself graphic design, realizing I would make a much better designer than a journalist. After college, I moved to Arizona for a design internship. I am now working full-time as a graphic designer in Scottsdale at a sports research and consulting firm. Over the past year, I’ve gotten back into fine art and illustration and taught myself hand lettering.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I work as a full-time graphic designer, but in my free time, I do freelance design, illustration, and lettering. I also do commissioned paintings and make and sell products.

There isn’t one thing I necessarily strive to be or make; I have so many interests. I’m more of an interdisciplinary artist/designer; I want to try every medium. Recently, for example, I’ve been exploring printmaking. Next, I want to teach myself to sew. I think it all overlaps. Even the design work I do at my day job furthers my creativity as a whole.

I’ve always loved and been inspired by travel. A lot of my current work explores Arizona; I’m in constant awe of where I live. I want people to feel the same about where they live, and the places they visit.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I think social media and the internet has changed the game for artists. You have your audience and every learning resource you could dream of at your fingertips; all you have to do is put in the work.

Providing artists an opportunity to promote themselves and showcase their work is the best thing a city can do. Phoenix is such a great place in terms of opportunities for public art and showcasing art. I’m really lucky to live here.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You will find me at a handful of events and workshops in Arizona and California this summer, but the best way to keep up with me is on Instagram: @kelleydillonart.
