Check out Kel Tait’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kel Tait.

Kel, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I entered into tattooing after the completion of my first degree. I had wanted to tattoo from a rather early age. None of my family was tattooed, so I’m not sure where the inclination arose from. I was that kid who asked too many questions and talked too much, so as an only child, my mum kept me occupied with art – drawing, origami, clay, etc. I used to take a lot of long walks with my beloved late grandfather and he got me hooked on nature and sketching. Art was always a part of me. Being a tattoo artist allows me to pursue that whilst learning, I still keep a strong connection with both people and nature.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I hike a lot. A love that came from my grandfather – as mentioned. I like to explore how to remove certain elements from their natural background and see if it’s possible to capture the elements that make each thing intrinsically beautiful and special outside of their usual environment.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I think to be successful is to be happy with what you are creating. Success is too often now based on popularity or notoriety. To be ‘successful’, I feel in any creative field if often to make sacrifices in many other areas of your life and dedicate yourself to your craft and the inspirations you hold dear to you. I try to only accept commissions that I feel I can give 110% of myself to. I want everyone that works with me too, at the end of the creative process, to leave with something special. That’s what most important in the collaboration, for both me and the client, to have come together, to create something that’s envisioned. And the collaboration, for me, is the most important part. Then, I feel I’ve succeeded – when I see the smile at the end.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I’ve been traveling now globally with my work for many years. I’m extremely grateful to have had the opportunities to work in such a variety of environments and cultures. Each adds to me as an artist. I have been privileged to work in some wonderful studios around the world and am lucky to have such a wonderful supportive following of clients, both that I’ve worked with and those to come. Without the continued support of these amazing people who have entrusted me to work on concepts that they will carry with them as living artworks, I wouldn’t be able to do what I love. My industry is now so heavily reliant on social media – which is a blessing and a curse, I am incredibly thankful to those who support and share my work in that realm. If anyone is interested in working with me or checking out my pieces, they can do so via IG @kel.tait.tattoo.
