Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Dines.
Keith, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
When I was 12 years old my Mom bought me a Kodak Brownie camera. I truly had no idea what I was doing, but I shot my first roll, of film on this little island off the coast of Maine while on family vacation. Three weeks later when the photos came back in the mail (yup – we had to send film in to get developed and wait weeks – not like the immediacy of digital photography today) there was an incredible moment of a magical sunset captured for eternity. Seeing the joy, it brought to others hooked me right then and there. My mom had it enlarged, framed and hung in our home. What a sense of accomplishment and pride for a 12-year-old! 45 years later and I am still taking photos of nature and wildlife with the same passion and joy that that crucible moment instilled in me.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am predominantly a landscape and nature photographer. I love being outside and exploring the amazing world that God created. Every day there is a new gift waiting to be discovered. In landscape photography the challenge of capturing the perfect light in that one fleeting moment or freezing a second in time of a bear or eagle in their environment for all to enjoy is a driving force. The leading message that I attempt to portray through my art is to have the viewer say to themselves while looking at the image – “I wish I had been there”!
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
The biggest advice that I can offer is to create your own unique style. Do not conform to what others define as art or what the rules should be. Create your own unique perspective and be conflicted by it.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work is predominately displayed on my website keithdines.com and on my Instagram feed by the username “keithdines”. I have held numerous shows in local galleries as well.
