Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Booth Photography.
Katie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up as a kid, I merely remember thinking anything that gives other people and myself joy. Not the most specific answer from a child, but I knew I’d figure it out along the way.
Through elementary school, I received multiple awards for my art, but it didn’t dawn on me that it was supposed to be my life purpose. Photography, painting, and practically anything involving art were long-time hobbies, but once reaching my teen years these hobbies were pushed to the side, and not prioritized. Upon completing college, (with a degree I was not the most passionate about) I was presented with the chaotic world of job hunting and career building. Months and months of differing jobs went by.
I felt like I was at a dead-end, just aimlessly floating through life unfulfilled, with no concrete purpose. It was about March 2018 when something in me just clicked. (Ha! photography puns). I realized I wanted to do something I was crazy about and didn’t feel like “work”. The idea of jumping back into photography nudged my inner Katie constantly until I finally said: “Fine, screw it, I’ll use my tax return money and buy a decent camera.” Shift just a few months later and I feel confident I’m in my flow and on the right track. I can also say I always feel like I have it completely together AND figured out. (Yeah right!). But every day sincerely feels new and like a fresh blessing. I also truly feel that part of my purpose as an artist is to showcase God’s glory, greatness, and the extraordinary gift of life. Overall, I simply want to keep striving to push my creative boundaries, while always embracing the simple joy of capturing the moments we’ll never have again.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Currently I do a few different types of art. My main focus is film and digital photography, including individual/couple’s portraits, weddings, and fashion photography. However, I am hoping to expand my skill set to more categories and to further regions. It also wouldn’t hurt to say part of my art is being a novice model. In the future, I plan on creating helpful and informational vlogs, as well as jewelry, paintings, presets, and whatever happens to inspire me or pop into my head!
Personally, when people see or experience my artwork, I want them to be inspired themselves. I believe that art is healing, at times, mending parts of us in an unexplained manner. I also enjoy using the beautiful and not so beautiful aspects of life to help others perceive things in a new way, especially showcasing what may have been missed and ignored before (architecture on a building, freckles, cracks in pavement).
Another huge intention behind my work is to simply connect. I create, express, and purge my own experiences/uniqueness, through my art. At times, it may not resonate with everyone. But I know if it connected, or affected one person, I am doing something bigger than myself. I feel that the message I want to send is simple. Look around and see the beauty, even in the ordinary. Also, know we’re all experiencing this time, moment by moment, together (And amazingly with the invention of photography and other media, these moments can be captured and saved forever). At the end of the day, I want people to know they are not alone, and art makes that possible.
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I think the conditions for artists vary from artist to artist. Looking back 50 years ago artists could be thriving and making millions, while some lived in a closet paying $60 for rent but remained fully on their life path. With so much evolving technology it can be a leverage for artists or a hindrance. I feel it is definitely easier to kick-start a business with your creative talents, but other skills are needed on top on creativity. I think cities like Phoenix should encourage art to be produced in not so predictable places and areas. I have noticed a large amount of beautiful art around downtown, which I’m sure has positively impacted the community. Additionally, I feel that networking groups should host public events more often to gain exposure and share their work with the public. Overall, the big picture is for cities/communities to nurture and encourage their artists to create for a bigger cause.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
