Check out Jonathan Gabriel Jr.’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Gabriel Jr..

Jonathan, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am both a full-time musician and a full-time freelance illustrator.

I have been drawing and making my own personal comic strips since I was around five to six years old. At that age, I was very fascinated by illustrated children’s books. I grew up reading Archie and Peanuts’ comic books including newspaper comic strips and started becoming fascinated with the creation process of it.

I started getting more familiar with the more serious comics and graphic novels as a teen and started knowing about storyboards for films.

As a musician, I tend to associate some of my favorite tunes in the creations of my drawings.

I still illustrate with a pure hand like I always have, and as of today I also make videos of my drawing process to share to the world.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I draw anything from still-life to very dynamic images full of movement and power.

I mostly draw my influences from Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, and Tim Burton, but I get inspired in just about any type of drawing or illustrations that resonate with me.

My drawing style tends to be very melancholic, which is just a normal reflection of my difficult past, including present day-to-day challenges.

I think it is a very healthy way for me to express my deep-seated, depressive emotions.

I use black marker pens as my main medium of drawing.

I hope that some people would find my art style interesting and hope that it would resonate with them in a good, relatable way.

The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Just do the best you can with what you have. That advice also applies in different areas of life.

Situations do not have to be perfect in order to start, or continue something.

It is never too late, nor too early.

Be unorthodox, be fine with failing and learning and wasting your time, but the key is just to start with something that you can control at the moment even if you don’t have a real plan yet.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
At the moment, my works can be found at my Instagram account at: www.instagram.com/jon_the_sharpie_guy
