Check out Jay Rizzo’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Rizzo.

Jay, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
So to start things off I actually am not an Arizona native; I was born in San Diego, California. Tattooing was not my first calling for my career choice. I began my journey as an artist in the United States Army for eight years in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. While I was transitioning out of the military I was offered an opportunity to learn how to tattoo. After finishing up my apprenticeship I moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Once I was in Arizona I knew art and the tattoo industry was my passion I then decided to further my skills by enrolling into college and get a degree in fine arts. At first, I thought my style of tattooing was going to be American style traditional, I quickly found that my skills and talent rested with fine line black work. Through plenty of trial and error I have been able to continue my career and as of today I have been a tattoo artist for going on five years tattooing out of Salt and Light Tattoo in chandler.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
As mentioned before I specialize in fine line black work. I feel my client base finds when I incorporate my geometric flare to my animals and flowers to be their favorite type of work that I put out on social media. I focus a lot on enteric and very difficult detailed pieces for my clients. Usually for me the most common statement I get from my clients is, “the last artist I talked to told me this couldn’t be done”. Basically, once I hear that statement it then becomes more of a personal goal to accomplish that tattoo and make it possible. I want my clients to feel special and feel that each piece I design is completely custom and unique. I want the general public to be able to look at my work and know without any doubts that it was done by me.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Personally, I feel that success is achieved when your client base seeks you out and when they are willing to travel to come to wherever your shop is located. Without clients we as artists have nothing. Clients are what make our careers tangible. To be able to succeed you need to have a constant desire to grow. You can never feel that you are the best or at the top. There is always more skills and tools to be utilized. You should never stop wanting to improve your skills as an artist and being simply humble should never be out of the question.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
