Check out Jason Dahlby’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Dahlby.

Jason, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I got my first camera when I was 15 years old. Too scared to shoot real people, I shot mostly landscape, macros, and architecture for almost an entire year. I began having friends ask me to do their senior portraits and photos for my family as well, thus slowly helping my social anxiety fade little by little. That was over two years ago; since then through my work, I’ve had opportunities to work with well-established brands creating their advertising, promotions, and social media posts. I’ve worked with a countless number of amazing models to create new art and keep the creative juices flowing, as well as working with beautiful families and couples to capture their gorgeous moments for them.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My photographs are a visual representation of the collaboration between two amazing creators. No two of my shoots have ever been the same, I go somewhere new every day, switch up the wardrobe in a complete turn, and meet incredible people. I don’t want, and will not, stay the same; and that’s the beautiful thing about this job, is that you aren’t tied down to it. I don’t have a specific style I retire to for each of my photo shoots. I keep it interesting for the sake of creating. I could be out in the cliff-faces of Sedona one day, and the very next be doing a boudoir shoot in an apartment complex. That is my vision, to show people you can have this wonderful job, to have the opportunities to work with amazing brands and people and to make a living from it. I will never get tired of what I’m doing today. I’m constantly taking on new challenges, concepts and ideas I haven’t done before, and it’s the entire reason I do what I do.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
If I’m being completely honest, this is absolutely a tough market to get into. In a sense, we are luckier to be in a smaller city; as compared to NYC or LA, where the market for creators is highly saturated. But even so, people slap the title Photographer on themselves the moment they get hands on a DSLR. With no experience in actual shoots nor editing, they put themselves on the market as if they were a professional. And it honestly hinders the real market for established creators who have been in this game for years, who can still struggle to pick up clients month-to-month. I am all for people getting into photography, whether it’s a hobby for them or they are serious in turning this into a full-fledged career, and I’ve hosted a hand-full of workshops and meetups for local artists, new and seasoned, to meet, network, and create together. But being a successful photographer long term honestly isn’t an overnight thing. It takes years of shooting, of editing, of finding what works for you and your style to become a trusted and established photographer in this community.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
