Check out Jaden Douglas and Lilyana Mendez’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaden Douglas and Lilyana Mendez.

Jaden and Lilyana, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Koi Fish started with Lily and I after we had first met. We both just enjoyed doing it a lot and often sat at the table drawing next to each other. We had both been posting on our own private Instagram accounts for a while and decided we would like to start doing it together. Lily had drawn this really cool koi fish piece with markers based off of her aunt’s koi pond, and so I had the idea of Koi Fish Studios, we’ve been putting out art under that name ever since.

We recently had three new artists join us at Koi Fish Studios: Bethany Rider, Paige Rider, and my sister Dakotah Douglas. We are really lucky to have them being creative with us and having friends to do art with always reminds me that I started art because it was fun.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
As of right now, Koi Fish Studios is just drawings and paintings, but I’ve never been one to stick to one thing, so I want to expand the page to encompass a lot other creative outlets that our team has and explore new ones. Art has been very therapeutic to me, and I’ve learned a lot from art about myself; for example, it taught me how to accept mistakes and move past them to create the best thing you can with what you have. I feel it could help a lot of people in their lives, but painting or music may not be something that clicks with everyone. We want to explore as many creative outlets as possible and share them so that people might see something they have not considered and be inspired by it to create or maybe even do art for the first time.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
If I’m honest, I think you’re a successful artist the moment you start making art. Art really to me is about taking something from inside your mind and putting it into the physical world, and I consider that a pretty powerful thing. Art isn’t something for me to get recognition from it’s just something that makes me feel good. So I guess from that standpoint the only thing you need is just the power to get yourself to create something.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Instagram and facebook our the best places to view our art, but we are also on Tumblr as well. You can check us out @koi_fish_studios
