Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacki Cohen.
Jacki, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Originally, I started as an admirer of glass art. I would purchase glass art on vacations, at art fairs, and galleries. I have always been fairly artistic and started taking art classes to explore my talent, classes in watercolors, drawing, etc. and nothing felt quite right. I discovered a not for credit stained class through a local community college and registered for the class. I learned how to cut the glass, how to use the tools and fell in love with handling the medium. The stained glass end product felt too restrictive for my personal taste. The studio offered a fused glass class. That was a match made in heaven, I knew right then and there my passion has been discovered and ignited. I started as a fused glass hobbyist and took local classes a few times a month. That progressed to classes one a week, then bi-weekly classes for many years. In 2009, I incorporated to be able to start selling my glass professionally. Without my own studio and kiln, I honestly could not call myself a true glass artist and could not be very productive. Without a kiln, you are a glass cutter and designer. A true glass artist must figure out the firing schedules, and physics to manipulate the glass in the kiln to achieve your desired result, In 2014, I built my own studio complete with power tools, and a large kiln. I have now expanded my studio and call my other workspace, studio 1.5. In 1.5 I have another large kiln, large cabinet that houses my glass, and store molds and inventory.
I work full time as a fused glass artist. I am as passionate about my art now as when I started. I love what I do and feel fortunate that I am able to have my vocation as my advocation.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
The art of fused glass has been my artistic passion for more than a decade. From my studio in Scottsdale, Arizona, I creates acclaimed pieces attracting clientele nationwide. My creations are a delight in color and composition, a testament to her enthusiasm and skill in working with glass as an artistic medium. The scope of my work is both functional and decorative consisting of bowls, plates, wall hangings, unique gifts, and home decor. From large scale installments to cabinet knobs and drawer pulls, contemporary pieces add beauty, value and individual character to any home or office. I also offers a large collection of Judaica artwork and is available for custom designs.
I am a trained artist who has studied painting, drawing, and ceramics prior to discovering her love for fused glass art. Always an admirer of the medium, it was not until I took a class in stained glass that I started experimenting with glass designs. Feeling limited with stained glass, I discovered that fused glass allowed me to more freely express myself artistically through the vibrant colors and unlimited designs. Fused and kiln formed glass is heated above 1200 degrees and becomes soft and easy to manipulate. The sheets of glass can be cut and layered, creating limitless possibilities. Since her first class, I have studied extensively under glass masters and is constantly educating, refining and building her skills and expertise.
The message I want my art to inspire is beauty and joy. My goal when acquiring a piece of my glass art is when you are admiring my work, to smile. I want my work to make you happy, bring joy. The world always needs more color and beauty.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
Social media has made art more accessible to everyone. Techniques are more accessible with webinars and online forums. My viewpoint is the public wants to know the artist story, understand their philosophy, know what inspired them to make a piece. Customer service and personalized service still prevails. I love working with customers. Whether creating a custom commission or simply talking to them about my art. I am a people person.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
The best way to support artists is to purchase their work. The easiest and most economical way to support artists is to follow them on social media, like and comment on their pages. Word of mouth is also an excellent manner to support artists.
I have work featured in various galleries throughout the year and am juried into various shows throughout the year. Currently, I have artwork at the Sonoran Arts league ‘Small Works” show located at Stagecoach Village in Cave Creek. I have artwork at Desert Foothills Gallery in Cave Creek. I have pieces on display and for sale at the Anthem Civic Center. I participated in Hidden in the Hills for the first time and will do so again in 2019. I have my own shows that are advertised. I am on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. I advertise every show and gallery that I am involved with in my monthly newsletter and on social media. My next show is the artists of Scottsdale Ranch on February 16 from 10-4, located at Scottsdale Ranch Community Center, SE corner of 100th St & Shea.
