Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Schilder.
Jack, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am an artist dedicated to working with pencil, and sometimes a color or two. Re-creating reality is not my only goal, although I push the limits of my medium. I use my skills to evoke emotions and perhaps tell a story. I have lived in many places around the world. I was born in Holland and spent my childhood in Africa. After moving to the US, I spent my young adult years in New Jersey followed by many years in Scottsdale, Arizona. Currently, I reside in Cave Creek, Arizona.
I first picked up the pencil when I was about nine or ten years old and have never put it down. Although I have worked in several other media, graphite is my passion. I graduated from an art institute and was a technical illustrator for several years. I have done many commissions throughout the years, and might still do a few more.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a graphite artist. I enjoy the challenge of working in black and white, and sometimes I use a splash of color. Ever since moving to the southwest, I have been inspired by my surroundings, our beautiful desert, and our cowboy culture. I am never without subjects for my art, especially where I live here in Cave Creek, Arizona. I hope people are impressed with the detail that goes into my work.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I think the biggest challenge artists face today is marketing, getting your art out there for people to see.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I belong to the Sonoran Arts League. My work can be seen at the Gallery at el Pedregal in Scottsdale, AZ and have also shown at the Holland Gallery of Fine Art in Scottsdale. Hopefully, in the near future, my work will also be displayed at the Mountain Oyster Club in Tucson, AZ. My work is also available on my website.

Jack has a huge heart and willingness to share his artistic knowledge with others. His immense talent shows through each new piece. Photos do not completely convey the spectacular detail of his work. Stop by the Gallery at el Pedregal to see them in person!
