Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivy Nielson.
Ivy, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I would say that my photography journey started with my lack of pictures throughout my growing up years. Being one of the youngest of nine kids, you would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of pictures of me as a kid. You can imagine the excitement once I got my hands on my own camera and was able to capture and create lasting memories for myself! I loved that feeling and the freedom that it brought!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I have noticed that photographs take you back in time when captured properly. There is a really amazing Maya Angelou quote that says, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I’ve noticed that it not only applies to the impression you give people, but it also relates to photographs as well. My hope for all of my clients is that when they look back at their pictures throughout the years, they will remember those butterflies that once came to their stomach when they looked in each other’s eyes during their first dance as husband and wife. Or reminisce on how small their little one was when they held them in their arms as a newborn. Or maybe when they had that wild toddler who was going on a new adventure every moment of every day with them desperately trying to catch up. It turns out two-year-old could be mistaken for Olympic sprinters when they want to be. That’s my WHY for being a photographer and my hope for everyone I photograph! Because at the end of the day, life isn’t about things. It’s about the moments beautifully captured by someone who truly cares.
How can artists connect with other artists?
I am a firm believer in Community over Competition. When you see everyone in the business as a competitor, I think that’s when people get lonely. On the other hand, if you reach out to other people with an attitude of service and community, you won’t believe how many friends and connections you will have! I am a part of a couple close knit photography groups who have been an incredible resource, a shoulder to cry on, and some of my biggest cheerleaders. We learn and grow together and it’s only made us better photographers (and people!) because of it!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Most of my work is online! One of my favorite parts of the internet is social media. I love the feeling of being connected to the people I care most about and don’t get to see as often as I would like. The same goes for my photography!
