Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Farr.
Heather, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Born and raised in Cottonwood, Arizona, my passion for painting and drawing was recognized at a young age. Endless hours of my childhood were spent outdoors, painting and analyzing the beauty of the world around me. I am the youngest of three, and my family means the world to me. My parents were always supportive of my dreams to be an artist and constantly encourage me to be creative. In high school my passion for art was amplified; I took every creative class they offered. My high school art teachers tremendously helped me discover my medium and my main inspiration for pieces. After graduating high school, I started working and going to college full-time, putting art on the backburner. I studied business and graduated with my Associate’s degree. I recently bought my first home with my high school sweetheart and created an at-home art studio. Fueled by a desire to paint and an eagerness to grow in my craft, I’ve chosen to pursue art as a profession. Right now I am making art part-time and my goal is to be a full-time artist within a year.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I have always been fascinated with replicating female figures and faces. I fuse elements of the natural world with feminine power and beauty. For my references, I often use flowers, seascape backgrounds, or nature-inspired colors along with a muse. Aside from my personal creations, a lot of my work is commissioned. I adore being able to turn someone else’s vision into reality. I create with an assortment of mediums, typically oil, acrylic, and watercolor paints. My latest discovery and obsession is gold leaf, liquid gold, and iridescent paint; for its reflective quality. Art gives my life a sense of balance, I’m an absolute perfectionist and painting is something I can control and perfect. Spending countless hours focusing and developing a piece is almost a meditative practice. When people perceive my work I hope they get the feeling of love and beauty I am striving to simulate. Though everyone will walk away with a different interpretation, my goal is to give them a brief moment of fascination.
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
It’s easy to lose focus when financial burdens come crashing down. I would say the thing that has helped me the most is taking on commission work. Commission pieces get your name out there and build relationships with clients. It is also easier than ever to sell work online and market yourself with social media. At the end of the day, artists create because they have a love and passion for the craft. There will always be people that don’t realize the time and effort your work is worth. That being said you can’t underestimate yourself, you know your value as an artist, and it’s important to give yourself a fair wage. I believe desperate times help you think of inventive ways to generate a profit. It’s important to continue creating through the hardships, it’s those times art can benefit you the most. I have no doubt that if you keep a solid mindset of gratitude, perseverance, and staying true to yourself you will be successful.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I primarily showcase my artwork on Instagram and Facebook, I will also be launching a website fairly soon.
