Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Oresman.
Grace, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Let’s see, to start off I’m from Tucson, Arizona! The good ol’ Dirty T. I’ve always been a creative person – it’s the biggest part of who I am! My first ever dream job was to be a fashion designer. I would literally spend hours sketching outfit ideas in crayons and colored pencils as a seven-year-old! I was also in piano and guitar at a young age and dreamed of being a singer/songwriter. My first camera was a plastic, baby blue point-and-shoot that I got when I was a kid. I’d make videos interviewing people, and even starred in my own music videos. The artsiest-fartsiest of ’em all, am I right?
In high school, I was a professional dabbler; I was in art, guitar, cheer, photo club, I could go on. My photography class, however, opened up my eyes to the whole industry. Here I learned how to take my artistic passions and turn them into a career – I finally felt like I could express myself. It was so refreshing! I got to experience the job head-on in real-world situations, finding my true voice along the way. If I didn’t know my exact college path before, there was no doubt in my mind that I would be a full-time photographer after.
I’m now at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona! I’m double majoring in Photography and Strategic Communications of Advertising, as well as working on my business! I absolutely love it here. I desired more exploration to see where I could take this gig of mine, and taking the time to explore has done wonders for me. I plan to maintain my free-lance company, as well as shoot for various brands, work in brand marketing, or even as a creative head. I plan to take this to Southern California after school, yet I’m always available for travel (work and play included)!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I strive to show growth in my work, as well as my life. Part of the joy I find in photography is to keep expanding. My primary specialty includes Portraiture of all kinds! Creative set-ups, seniors, model portfolios, couples, you name it! I also shoot commercial work and weddings. I’ve shot for various businesses and plan to dive into Fashion Editorial in the near future! Working with designers and intermingling my my love for beauty and art – the whole deal. While that’s how I’m proceeding with my business, I do have a passion for travel and fine art; I’ve been in a handful of exhibitions, allowing myself to dabble more whenever I get the chance.
To me, taking pictures of people is transformative. The experience of making someone feel worthy and beautiful in their own right is one of the best feelings at the end of any session. Getting your photo taken can unleash confidence, self-love, and inspire you to look at every aspect of life with a little more light! Photography helped me go from an introverted, insecure teenager, to the confident, extra-extroverted, strong woman I am today! That’s what is has done for me, and that’s what I hope to give my clients.
My hope is that with every photo I take, it’s one that has brought out that moment’s fullest potential. Adding flair to tradition inspires me to keep trying new things. I may have an eclectic array of portfolio work, but I think that’s where my sweet spot is! I chose this career because it fuels my soul, and I plan to follow whatever that means!
So far, it has been the best part of my adult life. I get to build relationships with all kinds of people! It’s so fulfilling to be able to connect with someone and help them see their vision through. Without human connection, the depth would be missing. It doesn’t matter if I’m photographing a new drink or if I’m conducting a portrait session; something has to connect you to the work.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Today’s culture is so fast-paced. We are constantly saturated with everything and anything visual, thanks to social media. This has opened a lot of doors for those in creative fields; I’ve seen more validation for artists, more of a recognized standard. I mean I get to study photography as a Bachelor of Science! How cool is that? I love that social media has given a new appreciation for creating, no matter the medium. The challenge, however, comes from all of this. There’s more and more people taking photos, buying the latest gear, posting every minute. When everyone wants to stand out, the chances of making a difference with your work are a lot more daunting than the days of Avedon. Even though this can be intimidating, I’m more excited about these times than insecure. If you’ve got passion, your work will shine through!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
