Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank & Buck.
Frank & Buck, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Our college-aged daughter was looking for a job that would work around her school schedule. We decided to show her and our other children how to start a business from the ground up. I had recently purchased some ties for my brothers for Christmas and had a few extra. I put them on Instagram and sold them all in a short amount of time. My friends asked if I had any more. I found a sewer and asked to see her fabric selection. I loved them all, and a few weeks later, we had over 1,000 ties sitting in our entryway. Our 13-year-old daughter made a website, and we were up and running. The name Frank & Buck comes from nicknames we had while dating…Frank from his obsession with his Franklin Covey Day Planner, and Buck from being bucked off of, and then stomped on, by a horse we thought was “Daisy”, but later found out, was “Fire Kimmy”.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
We select fabric as a family to make into artwork to wear around your neck. We have a sample book, and everyone looks through the choices and we mark the ones we like. The most votes get chosen, plus some that only one or two people chose, so that we have the unique variety you can see in our collection. We hope to have enough variety between the eight of us to capture a wide variety of styles. We have three sizes, big & tall, men, and boys, plus bow ties for men and boys. We also do custom wedding tie orders. The ties are hand sewn. We have florals, stripes, checks, polka dots, plaids, solids, global-inspired, even feathers and butterflies. We have recently expanded to pocket squares for men and bandanas for women and girls.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
We try to instill this in our children in all aspects of their lives…do your own thing! Don’t try to be like everyone else. Your uniqueness is what will draw people to you. Use your individual talents to add to the whole. When everyone brings something unique, it elevates and completes the project. Work hard, and always be looking for ways to improve, always be learning new things, learn how to be productive, learn to serve those around you and find ways to uplift others.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
We participate in a variety of local markets and shops. Our selection is available at Freedom Board Shop in Mesa, and La Grande Orange in Phoenix. We also have our own little shop where we have open house hours or by appointment shopping available.
