Today we’d like to introduce you to Dom Root.
Dom, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a creative artist and entrepreneur from Los Angeles California. I moved to Arizona to attend ASU, studying English Creative Writing and Philosophy. While here, I was able to execute an earlier vision of mine which was to launch I Am Root LLC, an events and productions lifestyle brand and company. Most of my life, as an adolescent, was filled with outpouring love and support from my family. They supported my business ventures, artistic endeavors, sports, and more. A lot of those experiences align with our mission today. I Am Root LLC is in place to be a resource/support system for emerging, local and underground artists/entrepreneurs. Amid my love for arts and business, I am a music producer, audio engineer, and writer and I enjoy making music that invokes thought and feeling. I got here through faith, networking, and hard-work. Much of my success is owed to my ability to work hard and build relationships.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a Spoken Word Poet, Producer, Audio Engineer, and Writer. I fuse my various skill sets to create my own music, service other artists and small businesses, as well as services for Film/TV. The message that I hope people take away from my work is ‘No Fear,’ I enjoy taking risks and pushing myself outside of my comfort zone in order to create something original. I hope that people are inspired by my creativity and that they find my content to be thought-provoking and authentic. My work is typically very special to me, and I spend more countless hours working and reworking ideas to lead with the best foot forward.
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
One would be to collaborate – team up with other artists in your field and see what you all can come up with together. Chances are you are all facing similar struggles and working together can be a fun solution.
My advice is, don’t be afraid to take risks, but do enough research to understand the magnitude of what you are getting into. While most of us have a 9-5 or a few part-time jobs, we still have to find ways to feed the artistic fire. So it is important to set small goals and achieve them, this could be saving your money to buy new equipment or just getting more supplies. You can also set small sales goals that will eventually situate you to make the next best move. I feel that it is important to plan and execute, so that you don’t feel like your business is flying on Auto-Pilot. It’s free to plan and strategize, so while the money is not there focus on the business aspect, research, build your catalog, brainstorm new content, build your social media. A lot for me is based on time-management and finding better ways to prioritize tasks for the day. There is always something that could be done!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My music is available online via all major music platforms, Day Trip EP, Mad Million – Mixtape, Late Night Radio – Album and there are exclusive releases on Soundcloud, such as Press Play and other singles.
My poetry is available at all I Am Root LLC events and showcases. The 14×14 Poetry collection is also available for purchase on www.iamrootco.com/shop.
