Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Adkins.
Daniel, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I Grew up in Martinsville Virginia. I found environment depressing to say the least, I ended up with a lot of problems, mentally, spiritually, physically and legally. I moved out to Arizona to heal and change my life. I have practiced creative expression in one form or another my whole life. I was always drawing, writing, playing music. It wasn’t until moving to Arizona and gaining back my life that I had found my true medium…painting. I sense have become obsessed.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a painter. My work focuses primarily on human beings’ capacity for a full range of emotional experience and expression. I’m especially interested in the emotions, faces, memories, and experiences that people reject or repress within themselves. My work is meant to provide the viewer with an intimate look at my subjects’ inner world, while hopefully provoking personal insight into their own.
I love everything about painting. I love what it makes me think about. I love the physical act of the brush strokes, the quiet focus of my studio. It does come with a downside for me. I am always striving to be better at what I do, so I often get depressed at the thought of never achieving the greatness of so many throughout art history. My work is contemporary however I hold tradition and structure close to my heart. Painting to me is a way of seeing, thinking and translating the human experience.
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Keep going.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I won’t be in Arizona much longer. My family and I are moving to Los Angeles soon. I do plan on visiting Arizona regularly but I will be mostly exhibiting in L.A. If you want to support me please reach out! Follow my Instagram and my website! I’m also doing a Kickstarter to raise funds for my studio when I move.
