Today we’d like to introduce you to Daijha Scott.
Daijha, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My step dad, an amazing artist, raised my siblings and I with a lot of artistic expression. Whether it was drawing, painting, spray painting, or reading poems, we always had art in our lives. Personally, I always labeled myself as an alright drawer and even less than an alright painter. It wasn’t until I moved out on my own in 2016 that I actually began painting. That Christmas, I was absolutely on the tightest budget- first solo apartment, newly broken car. I was broke. I wanted to show off my new independence and get gifts so I used the whole “It’s from the heart” card on my family’s Christmas gifts. I bought different goodwill items and painted each of my family members personalized pieces. I did portraits of Wu-Tang Clan, Prince, The Beatles and even Cypress Hill. When I posted the photos on social media, I got a lot of positive feedback which then brought me to where I am today.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a painter. I have stuck very closely to acrylic paint, but I strive to expand my graffiti abilities. I like to paint on canvases of any type. I’ve done mugs, whiteboards, glass fish tanks, clothes, records, the list really doesn’t stop, I enjoy the idea of refurbishing items, making someone’s trash MY art.
My inspirations are grime, hustle, the city and the color schemes of the movie “Tangerine”. I’ve made my way around downtown Phoenix as a “tourist”, constantly looking at it through new binoculars. I’m always drawn towards the dirtier, un-gentrified parts when looking for inspiration. Most of my pieces are kind of a weird, gross look at something- mouths, noses, eyeballs, facial expressions. I have over four shades of every color with a lot of black paint to outline the hell out of all my pieces.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
The biggest challenge has to be FINDING A BALANCE. I haven’t made art my full-time job yet, so being able to find the time between work, school, personal care, family, friends, errands, and appointments to paint is tough. I am always going through highs and lows of motivation towards painting because all my energy is so split up between several tasks.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can always support my work on my art Instagram @artxdayjasco. I just recently dove into expanding/networking for my artwork. I’ll be putting up some pieces at JustBlaze Smoke Shop this upcoming week and also you can catch me at First Friday in front of Snoh Ice Shavery live painting.
