Check out Cole Smith’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cole Smith.

Cole, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I started my business, Laguna Concepts, 3 years ago when I was 16 years old. I started out experimenting with casting concrete into silicone molds. I strive to create products with the most craftsmanship and diligence. Laguna Concepts main message would be to produce quality products that are designed with intent.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Laguna Concepts is based in sunny Arizona. I primarily work with high performance concrete to produce home furnishings. It all starts with an idea. I usually draw my inspiration from architecture and modern design. Being able to conceptualize my concepts in the world around me, makes me understand their function. I use different methods to fabricate my 2D deigns into the third dimension. These methods primary include 3D printing, woodworking, and machining. Being able to physically touch a design is beyond satisfying. After I have a physical model, I cast it in silicone – creating a silicone mold. I use a high performance GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) mix. From raw materials to a functional form.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
The role of the artist is to hopefully create a new perspective. My role as an artist to to conceptualize design, giving form a function.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I am currently producing some custom made concrete planters at For the People, a modern home furnishing shop located in downtown Phoenix. We collaborated on a unique design for a concrete planter and gave me the challenge to make it a tangible product. I have become good friends with both Chad and Sean, the owners.

Another place where my products are sold include the Pueblo. I supply them with a variety of small and large concrete planters. This last year, I have collaborated with FUTURO, to produced exclusive concrete designs – furthering my exposure to the community. We created concrete coffee flights that contextualize Phoenix.
